Shot a Buck this afernoon

Post by agingcrossbower »

Well, here is the story. Went in about 1:00 pm with my newly fived up ( with the patience help of One Shot Scott) Big Red 200E putting along in first gear low range. Have to go in roughly a mile which is all swamp to a Mike Paul's cabin. Had a South wind and planned on cut into the wind and following the river and setting up. Jumped three deer which can't be helped because they bed anywhere and everywhere. Got the a spot that offered me good wind direction and I could see some places 80 yards. Took my X-stand climber and 6" at a time inch my way up to about 15'. Got settled in and did a few grunts. About 4:15 a nice buck came from the SE and came right for me. He is on my left and I am left handed so he is screwing me into the stand. He got the 20yards and Dang I get so nervous I was trying to find him in the scope and when I did and all was clear I let out a Baaaa. and he put on the brakes. I got to admit my dot was bobbing and I shot. He did a jack ass kick (which was cool) and went end for end and ran 30yards and start slowly walking. His back was not hunched and he wiggled his tail side to side every so often and just kept slowly walking. He made a small counter clockwise circle and then into some thicker stuff. I also notice that entrails were hanging out of him on the exit side not more than 6" behind the front leg. I slowly make my way down and when I was six feet off he ground I saw his rack swinging slowly in the thick stuff. Got my old ass on the ground and tippy toed straight away from him to the river and made my way back north to the cabin and outta there. Going to be a Loooonnnng night and going in for a him 9:00Am tomorrow morning. If anyone know a coyote stay along prayer now is the time. Wish me luck and I will take pics.

Guys I think the way his rack was swinging around he should be right there in the morning, OR not. It is hunting, and I just love it. If I do not find it then I will count it as my buck for this year. Where I hunt is mostly gun hunters and I do not want to have them say that I am wounding all the bucks. That song AIN'T playing here.

Why not go out @ midnight with some lights & a few friends? If I was close by I would be the first guy to help you,,,The suspense would just kill me... :)

Good luck finding him intact in the morning Mike. What was the setup? Was he slightly quartering towards you. My first thought was quartering towards and a liver shot...still fatal. Were you using your micro? What was your arrow setup? Which broadhead did you shoot? .....sorry for the million questions but I'm too busy working to even get a hunting licence and as I've said, I'm hunting vicariously through friends.

I agree with grabbing some friends and good lights, given you know his last position... If he's not there  then waiting until morning will have to do. If he is there :D and since no mention was suggested as to night time temps ? You may want to get him opened up and cooling as well as getting the hide off. I think that may be of more concern than coyotes.

This old man likes the sun to see well. I used to yearn for tracking deer in the dark but I am long over that. LOL Besides this swamp in huge and it is Cedars then open, and repeat. Darn easy to get turned around in and then it is spend the night. Not these old bones. For me that would be asking for a hospital stay. Those days are over.
There have been several people that got lost in that swamp and came out looking like death warmed over. One guy came out in the middle of the night after getting turned around and went to the nearest farm house to get help. As soon as they saw him in his smeared up camo face and clothes torn and I bet a crazy look to be sure they called the cops.   That swamp I respect.
