Hit a buck need advice
Had two bucks just come in an one was real nice shot was shoulder penetration didn't look good he ran off an stopped u could tell he's hurt bad an he was walking low to the ground an wobbling but lost sight of him in a thick patch an haven't seen him slip out not saying he didn't how long to wait I've been bow hunting 23 years but still good to hear a dive from others

Go find your bolt and if its covered in bright pink blood then you probably got him where you think . Give him about 30 min to a hour and go get him . Post some picks.

See if you can find yhe arrow or blood where he was hit. THEN go have breakfast. Dont want to push him let him lay for a while.

Do not move at all for an hour then maybe look , if you have a feeling the shot was to far forward after the hour is up leave the area as quiet as you can and come back after several more hours , A bloody bolt tells very little you know he was hit all ready.
Better to give more time if in doubt.

Why in hell do so many people shooting crossbows take shoulder shots? It is a marginal shot at best unless using a rifle.
Give him at least a couple of hours before looking. If no coyotes around I would wait at least 4 hours.

With it being a morning hunt, you've got time. If he's dead in few minutes he'll be just as dead in a few hours. I'd slip out quietly and return after lunch. If its a nice buck, you want to give yourself every chance of recovering him. Jumping one after it has laid down for a while can make recovery almost impossible.
Good luck. Post pics when you get'em.

Re: Hit a buck need advice
Things happen at crunch time, lots of variables that could make an arrow hit where it hits. If he looked that hurt, I would give him a few hours. If he is dead, he will be no more dead in a little while. If he aint dead now though, its a hard pill to swallow if you jump him and lose him. Lord only knows that Ive done that more than I care to remember! A lot of the times, they lay down close, and I have jumped them by going to look at my arrow. It is tough to wait but I have to fight the urge to go getem. Like others have said, give it an hour and ease out of the area for a while. I bet you find him in the first place he laid down.

If you got in far enough to get one lung you'll find him in a bloody bed if you give him ample time to lay up and expire without being pushed. Sneak out of there and come back after lunch. I'd give him at least four hours. If he's not dead after that amount of time then his wound likely isn't going to kill him for days, if at all.

Time to wait depends on many different things. You answered most with the above statement. Two other major things is, "how hot is it" and is there coyottes around. If it is too hot, if you wait too long you might recovered spoiled meat, and you know what a coyote will do.
I would wait minimum 2-3 hours (if temps allow), that hit is not good, let him lay down to stiffen up and die.

Good luck w/ your search! . . . I've been lucky I guess (only have killed 4 w/ a crossbow total, I was /am primarily a muzzle loading/ rifle hunter) I'm ignorant I guess, I have waited as suggested but the theory behind the waiting so long is it that they'll bleed out better and stove up?
My thoughts . . . and I'm prob. wrong (so I admit that) a deer that lays up would clot up or lay down w/ leaves acting as field dressings. sorry didn't mean to high jack your thread turkey stalker . . .best of luck when you search!

With arrow still in, with luck you hit the opposite shoulder in which case you did good by backing out. To me it sounds like you are going to give him ample time to bed/expire. Watch for the arrow when your tracking, hes gonna try to pull it out and hopefully he does, making for a nicer blood trail.
