Ever been tempted?

Post by ccamp200 »

:? As I sit here at my desk working, I am forced to consider the pros and cons.

I keep seeing this beautiful 8 point pop in and out of the small (and I mean really small) wooded area in my back yard. Before we get too excited, I live in a suburban neighborhood south of Atlanta comprised of nice homes on 1 acre lots.

There is a slight rise behind my house so not a great chance of hitting the home behind me (or anyone around it). The lots on one side of my house are not developed yet and fairly overgrown (where the buck is hoping to copulate I suspect).

With my 380, I am confident I could pop open my office window and put him down from my desk and no one would be the wiser  - until.......

Until I have to track a blood trail through neighbor's yards - past their pools and playsets and patios and eventually haul the bloody carcass back the way I came. This is where it all falls apart. :?

I can envision the kids parading behind me as I drag my prize back to the house and their moms fainting along the way (no offense to any ladies on here - I am specifically thinking of my neighbors). PETA would surely show up on my doorstep and perhaps with the local news. Alright, maybe I am getting a bit carried away.

Now, I'll admit, I have utilized the bedroom blind ( ) on more than one occasion but that's in the country (and a lot more land than here) in a heavily hunted area.

I am pretty confident that I'll leave this guy alone to do his business and make more temptation for me in the years to come but I can't help but think ... just maybe.

The deadly precision and quietness of our tools of choice is what makes this difficult. I certainly wouldn't be popping off rounds here - that's for sure.

Anyone else faced with this struggle before? What'd you do?
Exekiel 22:30 - And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.

My bet is if you hit him well he will run straight back into the thick stuff and die within 100 yards of where you hit him and no one will be any wiser. :D

Every day! I live in an area that allows no hunting, and we see 200" bucks a few times a year, and 180" frequently.

It's not worth the stress. I have similar situation only 3 acre lots. Got permission from neighbors on either side however the deer went into another neighbor's yard. I felt like I had committed a crime sneaking into the yard in the dark (flashlight off for fear of being discovered). It turned out fine but on reflection it could have added to tensions between hunters and non hunters!!

My parents live in a rural subdivision (4-5 acre lots), and one of their neighbors called me twice last year to help her retrieve her deer that ran onto the neighboring property. Her husband is a busy doctor and doesn't hunt or have the skills to deal with a deer, so my parents told her I'd help her. I'm not answering my phone this year.

In my opinion, the risk of the deer running into the neighbors yard isn't worth the reward. Bad neighbor relations will haunt you forever.

You could/would be the main point of discussion at the neighborhood Christmas party ----------if anything goes slightly wrong.

Been there done that --- not a very comfortable party -- I still occasionally hear about it

Live in suburban Rochester, NY and see a least a dozen deer every day in my back yard and it is legal to use a vertical bow but not a cross bow.
I see the biggest bucks ever in my back yard which is 2 acres. I have pictures of 4 bucks that are 8 points or bigger on game cam from September this year under our apple tree all together at once during the day.
If I shot a deer in my back yard there is no telling how far it would go. Half the neighbors would want to hug me for killing one of the four legged pests that eat their flowers and bushes. The other half, the Dr. Doolittles, would want to kill me for hurting bambi.
Travel 3 hours to Delaware County to hunt in the big woods and am lucky to see any deer on the weekend and end up shooting much smaller bucks than I ever see in my back yard.
It is more rewarding when I get a buck in the big woods. If I were to hunt in my back yard I would hear kids playing and cars going by and it would not seem like hunting. It just wouldn't feel right. To keep the peace with the neighbors, I don't hunt in the back yard.
Initially, many years ago, I was tempted but I got over it and am content to hunt where it feels more right to me.

Resist temptation!

Do be sure to use an arrow that you don't have any others matching....
Maybe write property of Sheriff Wilson, or maybe F.D.A. or E.P.A. on it too.
A ghilly suit for a slow crawl recovery. Perhaps an astro turf carpeted wheeled dolly and another piece of astro turf with some plastic flowers and a couple plastic pink flamingo's on it to cover the deer for the slow crawl return to your home.
You're on your own if the deer jumps into a swimming pool though.

Or maybe a bow fishing rig with para-cord for line....
