Scored a double in the rain!!!

Post by HorizontalArchr »

Set up yesterday around 2:30. Seen a few deer being chased around by small bucks but no big ones. Rain came in around 3:30 and never let up. Then about 5 from out in the field I see a 8 ptr chasing a doe. Managed to get a shot at 35 yards but my arrow hit a tree branch resulting in a leg/gut shot. Buck ran 100 yards and just limped around for 15 min. That's when things got interesting. A bigger 8 came in and started ramming this deer and really going at it. Pushed that deer all the way back to me. I was relieved and excited bc now I can finish him off and end his suffering. Shot him and he stumbled on down the hill. That bigger buck came in about 5 mins later and started ramming the expiring 8ptr around 20 yards from me. Made a perfect quartering away shot on the 2nd buck and quietly celebrated this great opportunity. Both deer ran off after that last shot. Got down an hour later and could not find any blood. The rain sure did a good job washing that away. Decided to back out and pack my stand and bow out. Returned about an hour later and still found no blood. Preceded to grid search the area and found the second bigger buck first. The first buck somehow made it 150 yards to the creek. 3 shots, two 8 ptrs, plus got to finish off that first buck so he didn't suffer. Didn't get them out the woods and to the walk in cooler till 11pm. I was tired, soaking wet, but as you can see in the pic, I sure was in high spirits!! Shot these deer with my 380 using zombies and slick tricks.

Edited for spelling.

Nice that you're allowed 2 bucks. In Ohio we can take just 1.
Congrats, must have been a real thrill!

Yeah, but bucks are bigger in Ohio!! Just kidding, wish these guys had bigger brow tines but I wouldn't change anything if it happened again. What a memorable hunt this turned out to be. We can shoot 4 bucks in md. 1 per weapon season, i.e. Firearm, bow, black powder plus a bonus buck to use in any weapon season if we purchase a bonus buck tag and harvest 2 does before we use it.

Also in Ohio deer #1 has to be tagged before you can hunt deer #2. Not sure if that means temporary or permanent tag, but I'm not planning on shooting 2 the same day, anyway. Too much work for this old man.
