Rookie scores, I'm a hunter now.

Post by Green380 »

Got my first ever crossbow deer today, first ever anything actually.

I'm not from a hunting family, and had just started this adventure this fall. I'm very pleased to have some venison in the freezer so soon.

Headed out right after work today in a steady rain, sat in my blind and got a nice broadside shot at one of two does coming to the bait. Took aim at the bigger of the two and TWACK she gave a small mule kick and ran uphill to the north. With the impending dark and rain I stalked out to the point of impact after about 10 minutes. I hadn't even got there yet when I saw a doe in the woods to the north. I watched her for about 10 minutes she didn't seem to have a care in the world and was just nibbling at some grass. I couldn't tell if it was the one I'd taken aim at or not. I stalked a bit closer starting to doubt my memory of seeing the arrow hit the deer. I even shouldered the bow again and had a nice broadside but didn't want to shoot as I had no idea what happened, turns out this was the smaller doe. As I saw the doe I'd shot piled up about 20 yards from POI.
Just as I was starting the drag my husband got there. Turns out the best thing to drag a deer is a husband  . Took her to the truck so we had some light for field dressing. He did an awesome job while I mostly held the light and kept stuff out of the way (his first deer dressing as well as mine so it was nice to have both of us there to do it). Got her home and hung in the shed about 3 hours after taking the shot. Seems like a good Saturday evening.

Turns out my shot was right through the heart, worryingly all the blood stayed inside her as I never saw any blood at all. Used the illuminated diabolos with a boltcutter, may have to switch up my gear a bit. I'm loving the matrix 380 though. Never found my arrow going back tomorrow for a bit of a search I guess. One of the vanes came off inside the heart. :?

Now it's time to go after a buck I think.

Congratulations on your doe and the fine shot you made on her. :)
It will become addictive.
I also took my first crossbow buck yesterday afternoon but did not actually recover it until this morning after a 16 deg. night.
It was my 32nd archery deer ( we can only take per year in WA state. )

Congratulations!!!!!

May it be the first of many! :)

Sounds like you made a perfect shot. With those solid heart shots you will not get the spray or blood trail that you would see with a double lung hit - when the heart stops pumping the blood pressure drops and the blood pools inside. Quick humane kill and short tracking job! :)

Congratulations to you and your fine harvest !!
It is wonderful that you have joined our ranks and now you will have some fine eating this winter Venison is best when cooked with a little pink in the middle medium rare.
Their is nothing wrong with your gear set up blood trails are funny things some times, great some times and some times not.
I prefer a fixed blade head for the fact that it eliminates any chance of broadhead malfunction the cut may not be as large as a mechanical but when placed in the vitals they work every time.
I really like the 4 blade slick tricks x bow head have taken over a dozen deer with them with great results ,and if you find your bolt you just put in new blades and reuse, they also have a bigger cut than the bolt cutters and give very good accuracy.
You made a great shot on that deer well done.
" Turns out A husband is the best for dragging deer out" maybe I should get one
I like to give deer an hour before looking for them after a bow shot to play it safe unless you see them fall, other wise you could push them if the shot did not go as well as hoped for.
Welcome to the world of hunting and conservation.
