New members and their arrow questions

Post by L. E. Carroll »

How many times has the question been asked " Is it OK to use 350 grains in my new Grizzly, 310, 330, 355, 380, Micro, or 405 ?

Invaribly, those responding advise a minimun of at least 400 grain arrows ... which I'm very much in agreement with

Sure you can shoot 350 grains and that's what the industry as a whole does when quoting bow speeds.. (Kind of like the old IBO ratings used with vert. bowmanufactures, which everone knows is basically BS )

However, I wonder if these new members with repeated questions concerning their new bows or specifically bow "Packages", ever take the time to consider when looking at all of the stuff in the package, if a "350 grain arrow is good, "...."why Excalibur put those 150 grain fields points in there" :(

For , as everyone knows, :P by the implications gained after reading the speeds quoted by Excalibur   that 350 grains "WILL DO".

In the very next post, however, light arrows, those below the often suggested 400 grains are then attributed to many of the limb failures experienced in many of the higher stress models.

Come On Folk, and possibly even Excalibur....

If you want us to shoot a Minimum of 400 grains which is indicated in your packaging when combining of a 250 gn Diablo with the 150 gn field point ,

Maybe it's time to quote speeds for your " Loyal Following", of actual speeds we can expect with a minimum 400 gn weight arrow as implied by your actual packaging practices as well as the many knowledgable members here..

Maybe many questions, as well as failed limbs, would be eliminated by the "un-written double standards" as far as minimm grain weights are concerned. :D

Have you ever wondered why they send you a 150 grain head Gene when they then want to sell you their broadheads to shoot which weigh 100 grains? :D
Been shooting Excals for a lot of years now with 100 grain heads with no problems.

Shooting well below 400 grains with no issues on my Micro or my previous bows.
I dont think ive shot a 400 grain plus since my first season with my Vortex.

I also believe there are other factors contributing to limb failures more then the weight of the arrow. New shooters new bow. Partial dry fires dry fires are probably the most common, especially on a bow with the ADF (partial dry fires) . Thing is most guys want to blame something other then themselves their routine etc. so blame gets diverted eleswhere.
I have no plans of switching up whats been working for me and caused no ill effects to my bows. Other then a few dry fired on my part. But i cant blame a light arrow for that

I would like to see an industry standard for speed ratings. Presently, there doesn't seem to be. Excalibur bases there speeds on shooting 350 grain arrows, other manufacturers are based on 400gr or 450gr arrows. How about established an AMO rating? All IBO speed ratings would be based on a 350 grain arrow and the AMO rating based on shooting a 400gr or 425gr or 450gr arrow.

350 grain arrows have not been shown to damage limbs. People have only speculated about it. Most recommend 400gr arrows for deer hunting situations to gain momentum/better terminal performance.

350 gr arrows kill just as good as any other weight, the 400gr or more is not needed in the US.
