Butt-Out tool and gut hook

Post by Coon Gravy »

(edit:) Sorry for the constantly obscure subject lines... I'm trying to get better at forum posts.

My brother-in-law produced a couple of tools from his pack on our recent hunting trip that I had seen before but thought were a little bit on the gimmicky side, and I had to eat my words. He used a Butt-Out tool and a gut hook. I generally just keep a 3-4" blade and a pair or two of latex gloves. I'm not going to say I am rushing out to buy these items but after watching him field dress a pair of deer I can honestly say that I might have an idea or two for the old stocking. Nothing wrong with the usual way, but they seemed to work well. I ended up cooking all weekend as apology for giving him so much hell when he pulled them out. Any of yall ever used either/or of these?

I'll be honest with you, I do not have either but have wanted for the longest time the Butt-Out tool and then after watching that video a few weeks ago with the guy gutting the deer from it's chest down with the gut hook instead of from bottom to top, I think that I now want a gut hook too.

I had a the plastic guthook that used the replaceable box cutter blade, I really did like that thing especially for unzipping deer in the dark but my son decided he liked it too and relieved me of it. Tried the butt out thing once, worked okay but I can use the "core the apple" method just as quick and easy. Now I just carry and use my vintage Shrade gut-hook skinner.

I was hunting with a younger friend a few years ago and he had killed a nice buck right at dark. We took it to a skinning pole at his club to gut and skin it. He had it winched up and tried to use a Butt Out tool on it. It simply slipped in and straight back out of the deer's butt. We lowered the buck in case it was stretching from being hung and it still slipped straight in and back out. This was the only time I have ever seen the tool tried to be used. We were laughing about the "gay" deer that had to big a butt hole for the tool to grab.

I used the buttout a few times. Too many turns or not enough and a knife is quicker and cleaner.
Same with a guthook. Used one for the first time on my last deer. From now on it will just be a knife.

I got a butt out years ago and love it it helps to keep things tidy when dressing a deer. My brother was so impressed with how little mess/damage you create using one he went out and got one of the butt out II's last year. Mind you he was watching me clean his deer! lol I have lots of practice so I rarely cut too deep and make a mess and the butt out just makes that part so much easier and cleaner.

I don't bother with a gut hook as I have a good method of opening the belly up that is fast and neat. I start on the breast bone by making a 2-3 inch incision then stick 2 fingers into the opening and push the fingers under the skin pulling it away from the body. I insert my knife between my fingers and slowly work my way down to the pubic bone. the fingers keep the blade from snagging the belly by making a gap between the belly and the hide. my fingers never actually touch the knife and I use a short bladed knife for gutting. I use the same process for opening the abdominal cavity using my fingers to create a gap between the guts and the abdomen.

I've owned both and tried both. They both worked, but not enough better than my knife to warrant carrying them constantly.

I use both, and both work great. Keep in mind there are many different kinds of gut hooks, not all work well, my first one sucked, the second one I bought works great.

First post!

I've used both on two occasions. They worked and worked well. BUT... along with the endless parade of new better and best-ever products being released each month. I've realized now that it's just simply more stuff I have to clean and carry around. And more stuff for me to forget when I need it.

Back to basics for me these days.

I use a Buck Zipper Knife(gut hook).Fastest method I've seen to field dress a deer.Never tried the Butt Out Tool although I watched the video. My problem would be me either forgetting to carry it with me in the field or losing it before using it. I've cut back on carrying extra stuff with me.Just the bear basics.Gun/bow,a few extra rounds/arrows,hunting license,2 knives(1 in a sheath on my belt,1 folder in my pocket) and a pair of plastic gloves(worn under my regular gloves).

Butt out tool is great when you use it correctly. When you don't then it kinda sucks. I've always used a gut hook and would never leave home without it

Looks about 50/50... the price isn't bad I think about $16 for a set with both so I will probably give them a shot. I hear that little voice of reason whispering "you get what you pay for" though :D Still have a tag or two to fill... then it's on to the quackers.
