a convert?????

Post by wabi »

Haven't said too much about the Shawnee Outdoorsmen crossbow shoot because I want to let everyone read about it in Horizontal Bowhunter magazine first.
Today I was at the club helping set the course for a 3-D shoot tomorrow, and the club treasurer was helping too. He asked me if I was going to shoot my crossbow tomorrow, and I told him I probably would. He thought for a minute, then said,
"Well, I might as well bring mine tomorrow so we'll at leat have two shooters in xbow class."
I think he found out something (as did several other vert bow shooters) we all know. The crossbow isn't the huge advantage a lot of vert archers think, and they are a lot of fun to shoot! He shot his in the crossbow shoot, and probably shot a lot lower score than he usally shoots with a compound! We went on to discuss the advantages/disadvantages of the different type bows (trad - compound - crossbow), and I honestly think the biggest advantage the Excalibur gives me for deer hunting is the use of a scope (varizone) sight. I explained how I use the yardage marks to be sure overhanging branches aren't going to interfere (the 10 yard mark is about as high as your arrow's trajectory is going to be - if it's below any branches you're good to shoot), and gives my aging eyes the ability to clearly see the aiming point and target.
Well, it's getting late. The course is ready for a shoot tomorrow. Rain's predicted. It'll be wet & muddy. A long walk up & down slick hillsides.....
SOUNDS LIKE FUN    (and good practice for the real thing!)

Good Luck & Have fun at your shoot Wabi..

I had a guy from my club going off yesterday about how boring shooting a crossbow is and it is not as much fun as a compound,, I did'nt bother getting into it with him,, just told him to each his own,, what ever makes you comfortable..
And would'nt you know.... he does not and has not shot a crossbow  how would he even know if it is any fun or not :?: Strange little man he is

Went to the 3-D shoot yesterday and had fun despite the high temperature and humidity. Shot the course with a new member who was shooting a compound and trying to improve his record. No thought of winning, no desire to finish “in the money”, just a goal of trying to improve. He asked me what my score was in the crossbow shoot, and I told him I don’t keep score, just shoot for fun. He kept a scorecard for me yesterday, and I think I won my class, but I didn’t stay to see how the one other shooter in xbow did. We both had a great first 10, a fair second 10, and a lousy third 10. I think the heat took it’s toll on us. I liked his attitude, though. Only one person to beat - himself! That’s what it really should be. Have fun first, improve a little each shoot, and don’t worry about the scores - you will be a winner where it counts - in your own head! And he set a new personal high score, so he did go home happy!
I made a few memorable shots, including one right over the top of the bobcat target. If you put a 25 yard target right between your 30 & 40 yard marks in the scope you will shoot high dummy! Use the right yardage mark!!!!!!!!!!! Made several x-ring shots, and only 2 out of the kill zone (the miss & a high hit on a deer), so with 28 out of 30 kills there’s still plenty of room for improvement. I did nail that blamed turkey right in the x-ring though! Usually fall apart mentally on him, but yesterday I nailed him perfectly! Maybe I will go far a fall turkey with the Exocet!
The club treasurer did show up and shoot his crossbow, but he got there late and I had already started the course. He's shot a few 300+ (scoring the x as 11 for a possible 330) with a compound, so he's now seeing the crossbow as a challenge  I guess if a guy shoots 300+ with a compound then struggles to shoot over 250 with a crossbow maybe it isn't the huge advantage most vert bow shooters think it is
