Airbrakes -- Why --Howcum -- Whatfor??

Post by woodmnctry »

Ok--- gotta ask --- Airbrakes --- Why do we need these? --- what positive function do they provide/accomplish?
I have both a M380 and a M405 that have had many many arrows shot out of them --- hunted with each a bunch --- several critters accounted for and all accomplished without issue (Note: no broken/split/splintered limbs period!! so we can avoid that OMG!! issue)
I bought the airbrakes and also the brake pads middle last summer as I had read several comments that these were something that should be done. Thence it was hunting season and I was not going to mess with something that was working and had not been an issue. Thus the brakes and pads have yet to be installed and are resting comfortably under the bench.
Thus the question "just what do these accomplish"?
The brakes are a bit heavy and I really do not care to add more weight to the front of the bows just for the heck of it as both bows are working wonderfully without them ---- now that I have said that ---sure as heck the next arrow launch will result in a Ruh Roh but just looking for a reason to put them on while doing winter maintenance and waiting for the glaciers to recede.
I realize that the intended result is noise reduction (8 decibels according to the poop sheet) -- but some have alluded that the airbrakes will improve the structural integrity of the bow??? I can live with the noise --- just want to make sure there is not something more than that.

The metal plates on the pads are very heavy.
I removed the rubber off the plates then stuck them to the other bit wit Sugru.
It's a rubber silicone putty glue stuff.

Airbrakes - another name for dissipator bar but it sounds cool.
A lot of the guys here took the dissipator bars off their old style bows to save weight. Especially after getting a new gadget called the S-5 string suppressor back then.
Now they want to charge you a bunch of $$$ to add them as an accessory. But the name does sound cool...

As for weight nothing you will notice.I take my quiver off my bow in my treestand and my micro 335 is real light..As for sound I really cannot tell difference but most likely there is but weight is no issue in my opinion..

Wow! over 400 lookies and nada reasons to install these puppies other than they might help deaden the sound a bit!--- guess I will be putting them on the trading post as I can live with a little "twang"

I have never used them but a Micro that I handled equipped them felt very different...I didn't like the balance. I don't know that I ascribe to the belief that they'll extend limb life and even if they do deaden the shot, the cost is not worthy the penalty you pay, IMHO. Even when the Exos came with the db bars, I would remove them too and I don't see these Airbrakes being much better.

My Matrix 350 doesn't have them. I added the rubber baby bumpers instead. It seems to me that since the development of the various string stops the air brakes/dissipator bars are unnecessary. JMHO.

The ones that came new with my micro 355 found their way to the Trading Post before the seal on them was broken.

Many people here like them, but they were an item I never considered necessary.
I use Baby Bumpers or Reds and an ADF in an effort to protect my Excal's and feel that's sufficient insurance.

Noise when shooting is something I can never elliminiate and a slight amount of viberation, if any ? is not enough in my opinion to be an issue, and therefore, my decision to not use them.

I put these on my 330 and I gotta say they look cool BUT THATS IT!!! Yes they do quiet the bow a little bit but not enough to be a game changer. These do not improve your hunt. I killed deer before these came out and the deer never knew what hit em. Personally, for the extra weight that gets added to the bow, and I feel there wasn't enough wow factor for me. I wouldn't spend the money if I had to do it over again.
