Meat grinders

Post by Boo »

Our "Pro" series Cabela's meat grinder died. I took it apart and found a shorted winding. No way I'm buying another one of these because this sucker only ground 40 to 50 lbs of meat.
So the question I have for everyone is, what should I buy? We will be making sausages, salami as well as grinding dead things (no yotes or coons).
Suggestions please!

Burned out the motor, did you? You'd be lucky to get warranty. There's got to be a better way to mulch up old tractor tires.

If it is the Cabelas branded model warranty is much better than if another brand they sell. Asking is free.

I "bought my wife" a "Kit chen Aid" Stand Mixer a good few years back. She loves it (does a lot of baking).

And wouldn't you know it, they make a meat grinder (amongst other attachments) that go into the (power take off) on the front of the mixer

It is a somewhat slow process because the hopper can't handle a ton of meat at a time, but works great if I'm only grinding up 20 or 30 pounds of bambi. I then swap out the sausage tip for the cutters to stuff tubes (after mixing up the secret sausage recipe of course).

But I also have one of the "old school" hand crank jobs - still works well when I feel like cranking...

Nella Cutlery at Hwy 400 / Finch has a pretty good selection. Bought a lot of meat processing stuff there.

On another note: guy that fixes your alternators (or any other motor repair shop) can have it re-wound for a fraction of the cost of a new grinder.

I bought mine from Gander Mtn. Caught it on sale less than $100. Have had it several years, probably 6+. Never have had problem.

I probably have the same one from Gander Mtn. as you. I have been using it for years doing deer with it. I think it is a size 5.

You have to spend 4 to 5 hundred at least to get s good grinder. Even the spam aid mixer has plastic gears .I took one apart to see... spend the money and get one that will last a lifetime. Dutch

I actually have an old hand crank one like this. My Dad would use an old fan belt or something to hook the handle up to and old motor with a giant flywheel so the motor ran the crank at about the same speed you would manually crank it. It worked pretty well as I recall but I like my electric one a bit better. :D

Well Boo, if you were buying me one ...a LEM #22 would suffice.
I've considered one for raw feeding dogs ,but would need another freezer too.
Metal gears ,a five year warranty and bone crunching ability on fowl and rabbits.

I would if possible in your location take the fried unit into Cabala's and push for a replacement.
While not real familiar with failure rates ,after many reviews over the course of my research into grinders ,a Cabala's model burning up I've not seen any mention of.

We have a small Cuisinart that we use once in awhile for small batches. It has served us well but I wouldn't try to overwork it. If I was to get the grinder I really wanted it would be one of the LEM Big Bite models. :)
