Bulldog 400

Post by typical10 »

I decided to order a Bulldog 400 on Monday, for no particular reason other than I like new things. I just put new limbs and string on my M380 today, so it will go to the forum for sale. If any of you have a reason not to own the B/D 400 I would be interested in hearing from you. thanks jeff~

Nothing beats unpacking a new bow. I see many reasons to own the bulldog.

I played with the 400 yesterday a fair bit.
Which is the reason why I now want one! :) Rule no.#1 Don't play with new things unless you are prepared to buy!
It will play on your mind continuously until you do!
Glad you are getting one. It has great balance, feel, and speed. And since you can keep it tight to your shoulder, equals great control. On another point, the Camo color (fully covered) is really nice!
They are going to sell a butt load of these Bows! 8) :D
Congrats on the New Baby!

Jeff,

I have a new Bulldog 400 and so far I like it.

Since it is the first Xbow I have ever had, I may not be a good sounding board as I have nothing to compare it to, I have about 40 shots on it so far.

It seems to shoot pretty good and handles nice.

I did just experience my first problem this morning, which I will call Excal about on Monday.

I have been shooting the bow in my basement at 50 ft just for basic sight in and practiceand as I took a shot today I felt something hit my trigger hand and fall to the floor.

It was the rear frame/rail mounting screw.

As far as I can tell, it is too short to grip the threads, as I tried the longer one off of the forearm and it threads fine (it's just too long).

SO I don't know if there's a build issue or I just got a screw that is too short.

Other than that, so far, I'd buy one again.

Are you referring to one of the four that connect the anti dry fire to the top of the trigger?

No.

There are two screws on the bottom of the frame that connect it to the bottom of the rail.

It is the rear screw.

Mine came loose on my Matrix 350 a few days ago. It is a short screw but mine will screw in. I put some clear fingernail polish on mine and problem is solved. I assume we are talking the same screw that goes in the trigger guard itself.

YES, it's basically that screw. In the Bulldog, it is actually behind the trigger guard itself.

Mine is not long enough to get enough grip to hold.

I just had a thought. Pull your stock and make certain that the hole is not stripped out. If it is you will need a larger size screw instead of a longer one.

That hole is probably stripped. I haven't taken apart a bulldog yet, but I'm guessing the stock-mainframe fasteners are the same (3/4"x 10-32?) as a standard Matrix so that is not likely the problem...but I have been wrong, once

If it is stripped, you can drill/tap it out a size bigger or send to Excal and they'll put a plug in there.

I pulled the front stock screw out, it's longer and it threads in OK.

It's actually too long because as it threads in, it eventually bottoms out before pulling tight.

ThunderXB, that is odd that it is too short, I have never heard on that on the forum. Take the screw to the hardware store for a slightly longer one that will keep you shooting for a few cents.

I would call Excalibur Monday and explain your findings to Dawn. They will likely offer to send you a longer one.

Well, I had to know, so I pulled the stock off. (As this is my first Xbow I was a little leery to do, but it was easy enough)

The hole isn't stripped since the screw threads into the hole in the rail just fine.

What I did notice is that where the rear screw goes through the bottom of the stock, there is a raised round plastic washer/nipple of sorts molded in.

If it was flat there instead, I don't think there would be a problem with the screw length.

I'm guessing this extra raised layer of plastic was put there for additional reinforcement of the screw mounting area, since it is in a little different place than in the trigger guard like other Matrix's.

The thread length of the front screw is 1 1/2" and the back is 1 1/4".

If I can find a replacement that is 1 3/8" it would be perfect, OR I could use another 1 1/2" screw and use a spacing washer to solve the problem.

All in all, a pretty minor problem and I got to learn how to disassemble the stock & rail.

You can take a 1 1/2" and get a nut to screw on it and then cut it to length with a hacksaw. Back the nut off to re-thread the cut and screw it in the bow. No washer needed.
