String wear

Post by Predator55 »

Ok, I just bought a grizzly cub and have taken less than 15 shots and my serving has separated and broke. Can anyone tell me why? check the rail and no nicks. It's the stock string from Excalibur. I have a custom string but certainly not going to use it until I figure out what's going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No bhs have been used, It's only been shot maybe 15 times with the arrows it came with.

Either you have a badly served string or your string hooks are rough and need to be polished. Or you could contact Excal's cust. service.

Did you happen to hit or nick a nock while shooting with another arrow ? I find plastic nocks can be bad, but aluminum ones are usually worse when this takes place.? This can cause a nick in the effected nock which may be sharp and can definately cut thru your string and serving. Check all your arrow nocks and if you find a rough, nicked, or sharp edge you need to replace the nock or a the very least smooth it up after inspecting the shaft for cracks in the nock area.

As stated by others check your trigger latches for roughness...If found they can easily be smoothed with ( sizzor cut ) 1/4" wide strips of auto finish grade (Black) sand paper.... I start with 600 grit and finish up with 1500 or finer until it's smooth as a babys butt.
I think it's impossible to polish too much when using any grade finer than 600 grit ? But others may chime in and say different an give other recipes ?

Before polishing take care to cover or mask off (as well as possible) the area below the latches while attempting to keep dust out of the trigger area.

Sounds like your latches are rough or you got a bad serving job which I doubt . Quick polish of the latches should fix you right up ! I might also add that it was very smart of you to not put your custom string on till you get this figured out . NO CUSTOM string will last very long with rough latches .

My "Cub string" did the exact same. I replaced it with a custom and no issues since.

Check your latches as stated, you might have a funky serving as well. You can polish the latches by using an Allen wrench, or something like that to cock the bow. That will put your latches down so you can get to them, and check them out, and polish as well. You're wanting to make sure they are not rough or angled like a knife blade. You want them sort of flat with no rough edges. Good luck!

You said it separated and did not mention tearing. So I'm going to to go with your string not having enough twists or the string was twisted the wrong way.

One other thing that can cause this is cocking the string too far. As soon as lt latches stop. Pulling up hard against the latch stop is bad news....

I might really help if you could post a picture of the damaged string on here. Everyone is basically guessing without seeing the actual damage. If you do not know how to post a picture e-mail me one and I will post it for you.
