Bulldog 400 Review Pics Added

Post by typical10 »

I ordered a Bulldog from Woody's al la carte last week. After going thru the rig there were a few loose screws, that I tightened for now with out locktite. I topped it with a new Hawke XB30 SR Pro. I set up the target at 10 yards, dead on, moved to 20 dead on, still no adjustments with the Hawke, shot 10 shots at 20 with no adjustments. I could tell immediately a few changes needed to be made.
No matter what I did I could not get the creep out of the trigger, [quite a bit], so I installed a trigger tech which I like a lot and ended that problem. In doing so I will mention that the Dog has a linkage trigger, but will still accept the T/Tech.The rear screw of the factory trigger was loose for what it's worth. The rear screw that attaches the rail to the stock next to the trigger is too short, I will email Dawn later. If your a long armed person you will need the stock extension without a doubt, the matrix extension will NOT fit. It does have a very different feel from the matrix with the trigger moved ahead 3 inches. I did have Barry install air brakes on the dog it is at least 50% quieter the theM380 without them. It has a nice camo dip on it. I could also tell some difference in speed from the M380 faster of course, using 460 grain arrows. I will back it to 30 yards and start getting a feel for the longer shots along with some chrono #'s. It doesn't cock all that much harder, so that is not a issue. Like any new piece, with some practice it will be 2nd nature to have the same confidence in it as my 380. Jeff~

Jeff,

Almost exactly my experiences so far.

Trigger has linkage set up with lots of creep. Just got my trigger tech and will put in next weekend. Hope it helps.

Already put a stock extension on. (In fact, I could use a little more than the extra inch it added) (Putting a Voodoo comb height increase on it too)

Rear stock/rail screw is 1 1/4" and needs to be 1 3/8". (I have a couple 1 1/2"ers coming and will cut them down & rethread as needed.)

BUT, bow shot great right out of the box and with the air brakes, Dr Stirrup dbkillers/bumpers and brake pads, I thought it was fairly quiet.

Shooting 415 gr BE Zombies it has shot great short range, can't wait to get it outside.

Be interesting to keep comparing notes with you as we both move along!

I am surprised by the negative trigger reviews. The bulldog we all shot at Boo's had an excellent trigger right out of the box. Must be hit or miss?

On the trigger:

Already talked to Excal on it.

I squeeze it and hit a wall, keep squeezing some more hit another wall, squeeze again and it goes off. (Now that's ONE continued squeeze, not 3 attempts).

Seems to drag or hang up, with a long throw/creep.

Was told to take it to a warranty shop for some work.

Just bought a trigger tech to see if that helps, if not, off to the local warranty shop for some trigger work.

The Triggertech will have an amazing trigger release but your experience with the stock trigger does not mirror mine with the 3 that I've shot. I think you should send your's in anyways. The 3 that I shot had really great triggers. This is coming from someone who worked in the development stage to introduce the Triggertech triggers for the market.

Why cant they put an a + trigger on a high end bow like this when the competitors have tts already.Im sure even if it cost a little more we would pay it who wants to have to modify a new thousand +dollar bow

Same thing with the 350 LE. Several of us that jumped on them out the door reported excellent triggers and then some started showing up with bad latches and some with excess creep. Seems to be hit and miss only. Mine is great. :D

The two Bulldogs including one I opened and put together at Dons had really good triggers. If they stayed how they were or got better with time i wouldnt buy a TT for one.
Send it back.

Send it back.:
The one bulldog I shot had absolutely no need for a TT, especially a single stage because it broke clean with little or no creep. I was pleasantly surprised.

I agree, send it back. They will make it right.

Firstly, Jeff, thank you for the purchase, we're always glad to help!
We've shot and sold quite a few Dogs at this point, as with any crossbow we have ever sold, regardless of brand, guys always have an opinion on the trigger. Some thumbs up, some thumbs down, some don't care either way. We installed a trigger tech on a Bulldog earlier today for a customer. I think the hardware was somewhat improved, and installation was pretty simple. I think with Linkage triggers you will always feel a little something "extra," but of course the TT was smooth and light.
As far as we can tell customers are absolutely loving this bow, sounds like people on this thread agree.
I for one was very happy with it right out of the box, but can't argue with anyone getting a Trigger Tech trigger either.
Happy Shooting!
