String Theory Help?
A little play on the word 'String Theory' (astronomy) lol
Been reading some threads about Strings and Serving and I trying to understand.
So if you can help me out Great!
Posted some pics I took this morning to help out.
1st Photo: Shows the direction of Serving.
My question is which direction does the string has to be twisted Direction 1 or 2 ?
2nd Photo Close up:
Serving Wear 1: Shows wear on the mating face of the Serving String that meets the rail.
Serving wear Close up:
The Serving String wear can it be rotated by removing the string and re-installing with the wear facing up instead down facing the rail? Therefore causing an even wear and making the string last longer?
Thoughts and opinions, Thanks!

Re: String Theory Help?
I twist my string from right side ccw, i start my center servin on the right side going from right to left going over the string in a cw direction. I hope that will help you
Re: String Theory Help?
That string, as most are, is served overhand from right to left. if you twist it CW it will effectively loosen the serving.
As Mike said that string must be twisted CCW.
Yes you can and should rotate the string to even out the wear.

Re: String Theory Help?
Nice one and excellent questions! when I was doing some research on string building I called the file string theory for the same reason! I pull a ton of info from these boards and from the internet and made a single file as a permanent reference. I also found a lot of good videos on youtube.

Re: String Theory Help?
When strings are made, before there is any serving applied they are twisted. Endless loop strings can be twisted in either direction (CW or CCW) but Flemish strings can only be twisted in one direction.....and that depends on how the string was built. Many build by twisting the individual bundle CW and then twisting the bundles together CCW (right-handed). This necessitates that he string be twisted CCW to keep it together. But if I built left handed, it would be the opposite.
Servings need to be applied in the opposite direction that the string is twisted. As strings stretch, adding more twists to the string effectively shortens the string. This is the normal usage case. When the servings are put on in the opposite direction, twisting the string tightens the serving. Should they be put on in the same direction, as you twist the string you would be loosening the serving and get serving separation.
Hope that helps.

To reverse the side of the string contacting the rail use a string changer and take the loop on the right side and flip it over to the left side in a propeller like arch.

Re: String Theory Help?
stock strings are great they are more forgiving on a dry fire or partial dry fire , They are at their best after the factory serving is warn out then reserved, by then the stretching phase is done and they give fine performance.ihunt wrote:Thanks for the replies and comments helped a lot. Re: String Theory Help?
Have another question about installing new string. When replacing the string with new what determines the proper length? Do we put a line on the rail, or measure the distance from bumpers or what?
Thanks for all the help this had been a educational thread for me and hope for others as well.

Re: String Theory Help?
The distance from where the string crosses the rail to where the rail joins the riser is called the brace height. Some bows have a line scribed on the top of the rail to use as a brace height reference. You should decide on a BH that works well for your bow, and then keep your string at that exact BH as best you can by making adjustments (twisting) to keep it right on. This will help with your accuracy.ihunt wrote:Have another question about installing new string. When replacing the string with new what determines the proper length? When installing a new string, simply put it on the bow and then adjust it to the proper BH. A new string may stretch a little more early on so pay attention to BH on those early sight in sessions.
Hope that helped

Re: String Theory Help?
This may or may not be true on the new bows. On the older EXO Series bows the stock string was made of Dacron so yes - they were more forgiving than a string made of a material such as D97 etc. But nowadays the Micros and Matrix bows stock strings are made of D97 so it will be just as "inelastic" as any other string made of D97 or similar material.gerald strine wrote:stock strings are great they are more forgiving on a dry fire or partial dry fire , They are at their best after the factory serving is warn out then reserved, by then the stretching phase is done and they give fine performance.
