Where can I shoot my bow around toronto?

Post by bowmajik »

Hi all I'm from the Toronto area and I want to get more practice with my bow. I understand toronto has some sort of legislation against shooting bows (or so I've been told). My question is where can I legally and safely shoot my bow without running into conflict? As I don't have a backyard to practice in I'm forced to use friends and family's property but it isn't always ideal. I'd love to hear from some people living in the GTA.

How about Easthill Outdoors on HWY 115 1/2 hr east of TO. They have a great indoor range. Check out local archery clubs or gun clubs as many have archery ranges as well.

FISH-ON I was told when I inquired about the range near the science center that xbows were not permitted as they are overly powerful and chew up targets/back stops there (bulls $!% if you ask me).. I may give the other place on 115 a try..Do I need to be a member to shoot at these clubs?

Easthill Outdoors on 115 is a sporting goods/archery store with a huge indoor range. I'm not sure if they have memberships or just charge hourly. Give them a call and ask. The indoor range is the biggest one I've ever seen in any store or club for that matter. Great guys and gals and they are big Excal dealer so lots of help and supplies if you need any.

I've shot Excal's in there on the range. It was when the Excalibur guys where there. That may have been an exception, sorry if so and I've sent you wrong direction. If they say no then do ask them where clubs are that allow it as the archery guys there shoot at a bunch of clubs.

When talking with bow shooters, they all say that bows shoot arrows that are just as fast than crossbows. They also add that arrows from bows go further and penetrate deeper. With that in mind, why do they complain that crossbow arrows do more damage to targets? I would even be willing to take my targets to the indoor ranges. So far it's a "no go" in my region.

I do have an excellent place to go during the summer. It's 20 km from my home and about 2 km from my daughter's house. There is a brick wall that is just the right height that I can stand behind. With a cushion to lay my crossbow on, the height is perfect. I can shoot to up to at least 100 yards and there is a high banked sand pit to stop any stray arrows.

Yeah I don't understand the no crossbow thing at ranges...it's pretty stupid if you ask me...I inquired at this place near the Ontario science center and they told me " crossbows are too dangerous due to their high draw weight/lethal range and ability to take down large African game animals" :?:   ... I've got a bow and a target and now I have to drive way out of the city (was suggested to try Orangeville or camebridge). Should of just stuck to rifle/shotgun hunting

York County Bowmen have a nice facility north of Toronto but I think you need to be a member AND I'm not sure if they allow xbows. Shame, it's a nice place.

As for the Science Centre I think it's more political than anything due to the anti gun mentality in Canada. Holding a crossbow like a long gun could be mistaken for the real thing by the citizenry.

I know a vacant lot not too far from me but bring your own table, chair and target.

When I lived in TO I could not find any ranges that allowed Xbows.

Even funnier I moved to North Bay and you can shoot a bow in city limits but not a crossbow.

My luck has no limits! LOL

I can't recall which forum (if it was this one or not). But there seemed to be some serious talk about opening an archery range (xbow incl'd) somewhere in the GTA...if your near the Hwy 400 you can always go to Wolf's Den off Hwy 88/89 area
Happy shooting :D

If you don't mind driving an hour away, you can shoot at my farm which is just past Newcastle/hwy 35/115.
