Preliminary BD400 evaluation

Post by SEW »

I'm testing the BD400 against my M380 & 405. A few findings: 2" from riser junction is fastest brace height, factory string is fastest I've tested though it's not the lightest of the 8 I've chronographed, it's handling is easier for me compared to the 380 & 405, it's more esthetically pleasing, better balanced, limb mounting just looks better, it's shorter, and as accurate as the 380 & 405.
Fastest speed with 399g arrow -382'/sec, with 353g arrow - 385'/sec. It is within 2'/sec of the 405 (405 has DrS limb dampeners, Air Brakes, F10 string/string silencers). This is pretty slow for a "400" bow. The trigger: HEAVY and a lot of creep. TTs in 380 & 405 are vastly superior. If Boo is willing, I plan to ship him my 405 factory trigger for a "trigger job". I plan to keep the BD stock except for shrink wrap on the arrow hold down spring, a polished trigger, DrS string bumpers , and Duralyt/Optimizer.
The BD400 is, to me, Excalibur's best effort yet. I really like it! Bull pups in likely 310/330/350 I expect are on the horizon .

Good report Steve, thanks.

I'll know next week how my newly polished factory BD trigger works. (need to get back up to the cabin and put it back together).

I've have to check my brace height against your measurements too.

Concerning string and brace height : Moon (Tom Butler, who first had this BD400) found that the stock, i.e. Factory, i.e. Danny Miller string was faster than a variety of Matrix strings he had. I tried 8 various strings and also found the same. Peter recommended 2" from riser end for the fastest setting. I went from 1-3" in 1/4" stages and agree that 2" is optimum regardless of string used.

Steve, am I reading this correctly that the bow only got 3fps when changing from 399g to 353g? I cannot remember exactly, but, I think I got 17fps difference when I did similar weights.

I think there is a misprint on one of the speeds or arrow weights. If not this needs to be run again at the same time for both,,, 3 fps just ain't possible with 46 grains difference..

I agree and shouldn't have posted. I did this testing as the sun was getting lower. The 399.4g speed has been repeated numerous times, but the 353g test was under less than ideal lighting, as referenced, and needs repeated.
