A Tale of 2 Strings
I've been testing a BD400 vs my M380&405. During this testing, I've tried a variety of brace heights and strings. There is a LOT of difference in speeds with the various combinations.
Using a Force10 string with spider silencers at the fastest brace height I got the following speeds with these 2 arrows: 399.4g and 353.0g:
M405 - 352'/sec & 378'/sec
BD400 - 356'/sec & 377'/sec
With the factory (blue - Danny Miller) string
M405 - 375'/sec & 399'/sec
BD400 - 365'/sec & 383'/sec
The greatest variance in string speeds/brace height was 25'/sec. Peter's suggestion of 2" from the end of the riser to the string (BD400) and factory string yielded the fastest speeds. A lower brace height with the 380 & 405 was faster. The BD stock string was faster than any string tried. I just received 2 more of those from DM today. That blue string was also the fastest on the 380 & 405.
Hope this helps someone.

Very interesting tests Steve. Thanks for sharing.
Re: A Tale of 2 Strings
Very interesting Sew. Do you know how much speed cost the spider silencers to the force 10 string?

Steve,
Do know the weight of each string? Be interesting to look at speeds using the wt of the combination (string + arrow). Also the type of string construction and string material.

Re: A Tale of 2 Strings
I think the BD string is Excel not D97. 28 strands, 4" serving, wt: 97.3 gs. Factory M380 string - 111.1g, Vixenmaster D97(?) string - 111.3g, Boo string (comp -?) with silencers - 202.6g but seriously waxed, Boo F10/silencers,4" serving - 192.5g. As I tried the various strings(don't know the composition of them but think almost all are D97).nchunterkw wrote:I think it's 28 strands of D97buildingandrenovatio wrote:how many strands is the danny miller string and do you what it is made out of

Re: A Tale of 2 Strings
28 strands seems a little light on the strand count for it to be Xcel. Xcel is 80% of the diameter of D97 or F10 so the string should be 20% thinner than the D97 strings for the same strand count. Could the difference between the 111g strings and the 97g string be all serving?

Re: A Tale of 2 Strings
I just checked my strings again: the 3 stock BD400 strings that are on my 3 xbows(380,400,405). Some observations: 1) my initial impression that the stock BD string is thick is incorrect. With no twist on my 380/405, it seems thicker than my other twisted strings, including the same string with some twist on the BD400, as these strings come unused, they have no twist and seem thick. Simply, the BD strings seem to be the same size as previously 2) all except 2 of my 14 strings have 0.026"AM, including the stock DM strings, 3) to answer the last question, both are 4" AM, These strings have all been used and waxed. Varying amounts of retained wax may be a significant factor in the weight difference: doubt that though.nchunterkw wrote:28 strands seems a little light on the strand count for it to be Xcel. Of significance, the stock DM BD400 string is extremely fast; and , 2" from the end of the riser is the fastest BH.

Re: A Tale of 2 Strings
SEW, I appreciate all your diligence and attention to detail in this. And I think it brings s few things to light. Strings while all very similar but with seemingly small differences, in fact do have some pretty big differences. Mostly in the wt. The biggest difference between 2 of your strings is over 100gr. That should show up in fps loss, but maybe not as directly as a 100gr increase in arrow wt. Be interesting to look at arrow speeds with string arrow combo wts.

Boy, I agree wholeheartedly. I really did not realize the huge difference in speed between strings. Thanks Steve for your efforts.nchunterkw wrote:SEW, I appreciate all your diligence and attention to detail in this. And I think it brings s few things to light.
