Hoisting a crossbow up to a treestand

Post by longbow joe »

Now that im getting older the ladder stand is my perch of choice but i still us my loggy or trailhawk climbers on state land or scouting.my longbow was like a feather didnt have a sight to bump or any thing to worry about.but these crossbows are a little awkward climbing with a sling is kinda rough with the climber unlike the ladder and the ropes got problems getting it to lay off the scope when lowering. I was just wondering what ways you guys use with a climber and where you atach the rope.my micro seems to do better with the rope on the skelton stock for example ...thanks joe

I'm shooting the "old" Axiom and attach my rope to the foot stirrup when raising and lowering my bow from the stand. I cock my bow before climbing into my stand but never place an arrow in the bow! Never had an accidental dry fire while raising my bow into my stand. I also carry an arrow with a blunt tip to discharge my bow before lowering it. Very seldom keep the bow cocked when lowering it without an arrow. I tried to cock my bow while in my stand but found it too hard to do. This is my method.

When using my amacker I clip the pull up to the rear sling swivel so bow comes up nose down and lowered nose down . Cocked with no arrow. I do just the reverse with a rifle barrel up unloaded an uncocked.

I keep a small pouch permanently attached to my Summit climber for a 27' rope that is also attached to my climber for safety.

My preference is to attach my rope to the open Excalibur stock. One additional safety step I use is that I keep the hoist rope attached to my crossbow at all times so a fall is not possible. I tie a small double loop on my hoist rope about 5-6 feet from the stock so that my crossbow cannot fall more that a few feet.

I hook the small double loop to a small metal hook that is also permanently to my Summit climber within easy reach.

You can get pouchs at wal-mart.attached as said above to rail on both sides of seat part of climber. You want rope that does not get all twisted in pouch one that stays memory free if not it will be like snake wrapping around everything..

i also mark my rope with pen to see that i am at my 16/18 ft height in tree when i get there i stop climbing.

problem i have with small dia rope is it burns your hands and is hard to pull up your bow ..Now using anti slip gloves real light pair i found to pull rope .this helps with slipping and burning of your hands and helps on lifting weight...

i hook my bow so butt of bow is down which is around stirrup..
also i can cock my bow in my stand no problem at all in fact i can do my micro 335 while sitting down but i do not suggest that.

is stirrup down because you want that hitting dirt/brush first vrs the stock ?or is it because it balances bow so scope does not land on its back..That is problem with rifles with scopes/barrel they fall back on scope..

i put a scope cover over my scope when i let it down from tree in case it hits rock or laural ...

I cock my 355 on the ground first. Wrap pull up rope around stock behind the grip and climb up. Then I get situated with pack, harness etc, then pull up the crossbow with the business end pointing down. Then I take of the kwikee kwiver and put it in the kwikee kwiver bracket. Remove an arrow from the quiver and load the crosssbow. I do the same thing in reverse when it is time to leave. I normally decock the bow at the base of the tree before I start my walk out.

I keep a pull rope attached to my ladder stands. I stand the bow on the stirrup and tie the rope to the buttstock end, taking enough slack out of the rope so that the bow will still be standing pretty much upright on the stirrup. Then when I get situated in the stand I pull the bow up. I lower it the same way, the scope or limbs never touches the ground.

That's exactly how I do it as well. I even do that on my hang-on stands. Every couple years I change out the pull strings. I try to make sure the string is a few feet longer than necessary so I can gently lower any weapon all the way to the leaves. For guns I tie around the top of the sling so it comes up and down with the barrel up (unloaded of course).

I use Climbers mostly. I have a few with leveling features, and just picked up a Drone from Olman Treestands. I use two different rope setups, and here is why. I use a 50' rope doubled over with a hitch knot in one end. I like to hunt at 25' up, and when i feel the tug of my bow / gun / crossbow, I know I'm up there. I tie it to my foot climber, and through the thumb hole since my Xbows all have that feature, and my Optima CVA does as well. My Hoyt / PSE verticals I go around the top cams.My other rope is the Third Hand Archery 30' Kentucky Rope, i attach that to my belt loop, and the big loop on the opposite end just like their instructions. Works pretty good for me. 8)

attach a pulley to the tree and pull bow up before you climb and tie it off hook to foot strup with a snap and snap it on climb down and lower it down when on ground can hook you back pack on it also much easier

going higher than 15/18 ft causes your angle of shot to be more difficult..52 years hunting and never went above 18 ft my sweet spot is usually 15 ft..Bucks walk right under my climber at times...Get too high you can be skylined..
