Bought a Chronograph last night

Post by janesy »

Ordered a Chronograph last night from Amazon.
I've got to sell one of my bows. MATRIX 355, MICRO 335 OR MICRO 355. I do like the micro 355 the best but truth be told, although it does "feel" like the 355 is hitting harder than the 335, they both seem to bury the arrows equally into the target. So my curiosity has finally got the better of me and I'm going to see what is shooting what and how fast gen II 335 vs 355. Because really, as much as I like the 355, if the 335 is matching it, why pull harder?

That should be an interesting exercise!

I'm sure many will be curious about your findings. Some have reported that the 1st Generation Micros were punching a bit above their weight (especially the nightmare versions), but my plain old camo Gen 1 was right about the advertised performance.

Logically it would only make sense that by design, if the 335 is shooting fast, slow or otherwise, than an exactly the same outfitted 355 should do the same ,only faster. Disregard the whole limb deflection issue, because they are what they are, and that's not what I'm interested in.
I guess the only way to really know would be to shoot one, then swap the riser to the next, without adjusting anything. Tesing one bow against another will never be consistent.

I've already completely over thought this, I just want to know what a 335 does against a 355 LOL. And which one I should keep. I can see I'm going to have fun with this.

My Gen. 1 335 camouflage was punching 343 fps with 352 gr. Arrows. That bow I put over 4000 shots on it with "NONE" problems! Went thru 5 strings plus original string.
Very fast bow!

Yes I recall you mentioning that. I doubt it, but if the 355 is shooting 8 over, that puts it in M380 territory for the average bow. Not spamming the 380, I plan to run my friends over the Chrono as well

What is a good brand and model of chrony to buy. Is there something specific to look for in a chronograph.

I just bought the Shooting Chrony Beta Master. Careful how you orient the words.

I wasn't too concerned with the model, I was more interested in which one would come faster. There was an archery model for the same price that adds the light kit... But it was a month out . Who knows maybe it's a piece off crap. But it's their upper end basic model. If it's no good, I'll either shoot it out of frustration, or write up a really good Kijiji ad and move it on down the road. Just kidding it'll work.

That's pretty much what I'm expecting. Curious to see, if for whatever the 335 is an over achiever, than we are looking at the extra draw weight, for only a couple feet.

Don't use it in direct sunlight , My 380 shot a blistering 405 fps . I knew that's not right but tried again and got 407 fps ? Moved chrony to shade with sun shade's on and it's fine , shot what I was expecting then with a 400 gr. . I only chrony on cloudy day's/ shade with the shade's on. I'm using the F1 .

Great thanks for the tips Bones. I'm going to try to rig it up for use in the basement. I'll set it up with a light kit if I need to, that way it should report the most consistent speeds in case I don't get all the same bow/string/arrow weight combos done at the same time.

Depends on your budget, in the last few years there has been some new technology coming into the market, but be prepared to pay much more than a regular chrono.

The new limb mounting geometry looses a lot of '/sec, IMO. The BD400 is actually ~20'/sec slower than the M405 yet has slightly longer draw length. Still, I prefer this new geometry as I think it greatly reduces the limb stress. FWIW, my BD400 is slightly more accurate than my M380/405 which are eye wateringly accurate to start with.
Excal is moving the right way: giving up a little speed to improve reliability. To me, the BD400 is the best long range product Excal has made yet - I think. Still a lot of comparison testing to do between it and my M405 to make a final determination of what goes with me to my stands with long shooting ranges and for bean field hunts.
