700 Grain arrow from 400 BD

Post by Hunt it »

Last week I posted about my findings with the 545 gr arrow flying at same point of impact (as a 415gr arrow) at 20-30-40. At 50 it started to drop off. I have made up a 700 grain arrow using a 20" 2219 with a CE 4000 carbon shaft inside. The CE shaft has a 100gr brass insert installed. With a 100gr field point arrow weighs in at 700 grains. I will test it this afternoon at 20-30-40 from ground level and 18' height as well. My intention is to use as heavy an arrow as possible for close range moose this fall. The hope is to not have to change sight in from my 415 grain original zombie arrow. Stay tuned for findings....

That defies the arrow performance results posted here. Good stuff. Very interested in your next test.

Ok, the point of no return out of my 400BD is somewhere between 545 grains and 700 grains  . The 700 grain arrow had exact same point of impact at 20yards as the 410 & 545 gr arrows. Both from level ground and a 20' elevated stand. At 30 yards it dropped 4" and at 40 yards it dropped 7". Boy did that 700 quieten down the bow, you could barely hear it shoot! Gotta find a recipe for 600 to 625 grain 20" arrow if anyone has one let me know. If I was not planning on anything beyond 40-50 yards it would be no big deal to sight in scope for the 700 grain arrows. However, my intention was to see how heavy I could go without adjusting scope. Initially I was surprised to see no change between 410 to 545 out to 50 yards. If I could get same results with 600 grain arrow that would be great. Five weeks till moose season so still time to experiment.

Well, you could get a Zombie Slayer with an ID @ .300", insert a Carnivore arrow with a .296" OD at 8.5 grains per inch, plus the 9.1 grains per inch of the Zombie, and build from there. With 110 grain inserts, and 125 grain heads, you'll be over 600 grains.

Try a 20" Zombie slugged with an 8" - 10" Black Eagle Carnivore shaft. A thinner diameter 125 grain brass insert. Blazers and a Luminok and you should be in that ballpark of 600 grains. You could probably go with an 19" Carnivore, leaving the short end for the nock.

Danny Miller made up the arrows Bill T. Shot the elephant with. Me thinks they were double shaft and 600 some odd grains sticks in my mind. Would be a good source for info. :D

Paul, I believe the elephant arrows were in the 1200 grains ballpark and the only reason it didn't blast through was because it buried in the offside leg...I think.
