slugged arrows

Post by Ekkie »

I'm interested in taking an XX75 shaft (either 2216 or ideally 2219) and slugging the whole shaft with a carbon shaft that fits tightly inside. The goal is to make the arrow as stiff as possible while keeping the final 18" arrow lighter than say, 750 grains.

I've read posts by Vixenmaster about him slugging a 2213 shaft with a 2013 shaft. That may work, but I'm skeptical about that combo being significantly stiffer than an un-slugged 2219 shaft. Using a 2213 also means using different flat nocks, which I'd prefer not to have to do.

Does anyone know of a stiff carbon shaft that would fit tightly inside a 2219 or 2216?

Thanks,
~E

A CE 4000 shaft fits perfectly inside 2219. Using a 100gr brass insert inside the 4000 shaft, blazer 2" vanes and plastic nocks total weight on 20" arrow with 100gr broadheads is 700 grn. A GT 55/75 will also work but is not as snug a fit as the CE.

What bow are you going to shoot this out of? What is your intended game that you want 700grns? Drop off is considerable even out of my 400BD but as long as you are shooting 40 yards or less it should work fine. As for penetration I'd plan on one shot per arrow on game as the likely hood of finding them will be slim as they are going underground once pass through whatever you are shooting at unless it's rock.

Thanks a ton for the info! I'm setting these arrows up for shooting southern hogs and western elk. I'll either be using a Gen1 Micro 335, or an Excal / Middleton hybrid (please, no hate mail!). The hybrid is a little faster than a typical Matrix 380, but not as fast as a 405.

I always strive to hunt within 25 yards, and as long as I stick to that I'm sure I'll be fine regarding arrow drop.

Thanks again for the information... trying to find exact specs on shaft diameters has been a little fruitless.

Boy, I was worried about shooting 455 gr bolts,.now I feel a lot better. I'm shooting alum 2219/16 and never even thought about slugging one.

I also slugged 2216 by puttin 2016 inside. I took the measurements of my front inserts n rear nocks. Mine at 20" weighed upwards of 600gr includin vanes n such. Wall thickness is double the .0016

That's interesting- I imagine the 2216 / 2016 combo was a very tight fit. The 2216 ID should be 22/64 - .032 or 0.31175"... and the 2016 OD should be 20/64 or 0.3125"... so in theory the 2016 shouldn't actually fit at all. Those numbers are all "theoretical"; I didn't measure the shafts with calipers or whatever.

Did you use epoxy to glue them together?

Thanks,

Ekkie, you have me wondering. What would you figure to be the main benefit in the project you are considering? Increased penetration?

Benefits- an ultra durable arrow that's very stiff (which should lead to increased precision). I have a couple of reasons for preferring an aluminum shaft, but unfortunately they're not as stiff as Spynal Tapps or some other carbon shafts.

The extra weight will increase penetration, sure... but I don't have a problem with penetration using plain old 2219 shafts.

I've shot Easton FMJs, but they're still not as stiff as I'd like and they're also more fragile than a 2219.

In the end, it's all about tinkering for me I guess. :)
