Tennessee's is nicknamed the volunteer state because of the thousands of soldiers that volunteered to fight the British in the War of 1812. After that the secretary of state asked for 2800 volunteers for the Mexican War. He got over 30,000. Probably better known now for the University of Tennessee Volunteers. Or, UT Vols.
