Bear camp 2016
We had an outstanding hunt this past week in Northern Ontario. 5 cross bow hunters pursued the elusive black bear. I am still amazed how these big game animals can sneak in with zero noise. When hunting bears you really need to pay attention to your surroundings..
The view of one of the thousands of area lakes.
3 nice bears were taken during the week.
We had some time for an evening Pike hunt..
Northern surf and turf dinner. BBQ Bear tenderloins and pan fried Pike. No Y bones in those fillets...
Next up is Deer hunting. Oct 01st can't get here fast enough....

Sounds like a great time Jeff. Congratulations on your guy's bears and time spent afield with dear friends. Now hopefully you'll be able to get out soon and spend some time afield with deer friends.

Re: Bear camp 2016
I just want to give a HUGE thanks to the crew for taking me in this year and showing me the ropes. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to take a bear with a bow, and with their help I was successful . Even if I wouldn't have killed, this still would've been the best hunt of my life...the country, the company and camraderie alone made the trip.
I learned a TON in the process too:
-get between big bears and their food; they're not going to be thrilled with you
-yelling at said bears, "F@%# right off" seems to not work, as apparently they don't speak French.
-if you want to push bears off the bait before you approach your stand, you apparently have to make a lot more noise than I was!
-shot placement is very citical, because they just don't bleed a lot externally on a marginal shot...fat and fur make blood trailing a challenge.
-field judging the size of a bear, especially from a tree can be difficult so studying game cam footage is important so you know which critters are working the bait.
Big John, I owe you debt of gratitude for opening up your cottage and imparting your knowledge of the area and of bear behaviour. Very grateful.
I'm hooked on bears now, I doubt deer hunting alone will ever suffice. There's no bigger thrill than arrowing a bear, IMO.

My turn to remind you to pack said bear claw necklace next year. I can't wait to drag a 400lbs boar out of the woods...Big John wrote:Aaahhhh Horse Doody!!!!
