Heading out for Elk tomorrow, w/ hunt report

Post by L. E. Carroll »

Cold weather the past 4 days and down into the 50-60's with some much needed rain the last couple days also. This should kick the rut in where I hunt. So the bugle and cow call may become important parts of the preperations to pull this off this year ?

Heading to the Washington Coast just across the Astoria bridge from Oregon... Scouting Wed. thru Fri. with opener on sat Morning. I plan on hunting the same area that produced the 4x4 in my avatar for me last year at almost this exact same time. However, any bull with at least 3 points on one side or an antlerless animal is legal.

Wish me luck, I'll be camping in the Scamp and hopefully staying warm and dry at night.....I will stay until the last day if needed, which will be the 22 nd of Sept.....

I have the walk in cooler running at 34 deg and ready to hang one... Matrix 355 and 380 are all set up and sighted in.

Heck, I even lined up two good friends with the promise of 1/2 the elk to split between them, should I actually have to pack another out this year which was better than my planning last year... However, that was the first elk I have taked either by Modern Rifle , Muzzleloader, or Bow that I was not able get up close to or get my winch on and drag out with the 5600 ft. of 3/16" slainless aircraft cable I carry on a spool, in over 30 years of persuing them.

Anyway wish me luck and I'll report back upon the end of this early season hunt...( It opens again for about a month around Thanksgiving in some limited areas nearby if more time is needed.)

Gene

I got drawn this year for Archery Elk. In my jurisdiction, that doesn't allow me the use of a crossbow, unless I have a "Disabled" permit. My eyesight is poor and I don't remember things like I used to, but apparently that doesn't meet their requirements.

Anyway, my season started last Monday. I was hunting at a friend's farm. It's close to a Provincial Park, so animals often wander in from the park.

I had arranged considerable time off from work over the course of the hunting season. I've had an elk drought for the past three years. One year I didn't get drawn for a licence. Another year I called one in to my tree stand, but he was too slow in arriving and I couldn't make out my sights in the shadow. He just got bored and walked away. The next year I didn't see any elk, and the only calling to be heard was from other hunters.

Anyway those other "drought" years were fun. I got to be away from work for an extended period. It's a pleasure to sit in a tree stand and watch and listen to nature.

This year was a disaster. A couple of hours into the first day of hunting, I heard a cow answer my cow call. I called back. She called back to me.

A few minutes later I had a young cow standing in front of me. Shortly after, she was laying on the ground. A few hours after that, she was hanging in a cooler.

Now, cuss my luck, I'm at work and during my lunch hour posting this.

Gene, I wish you rotten luck. I hope you see tons of elk. I hope they are screeching into your ear so loud that you have to put in ear plugs. I also hope that you have to struggle every minute of your hunting season, and that you don't get to shoot one until the last minute of light on the last day of your season. That's the kind of rotten luck I hope you have.

Got a call from Gene, he has his camp setup, and has a few dozen Elk in the fields near his honey hole. He really sounds as excited as a seven year old boy on Christmas Eve. Sounds very promising folks! I'm excited for him after yapping with him for a while, all I could say right now is, "I wanna go" 8)

GOOD LUCK Gene! :D
