Feedback on hunting arrow combinations

Post by JB'STAXIDERMY »

Goodmorning everyone I'm looking for some feedback on everyone's arrow and broadhead combination. Im shooting the stock firebolts with 100 gr slick tricks. They work well but they dont shoot the same as my field points to be able to hit the mark with my broadheads my field tips hit 3 or 4 in high. So I am coming to you guys to see what combination you guys use and why, before i go spending a ton of money on stuff that want work for me. Im shooting an equinox with a flemish string im not so concerned with speed but i want enough energy and speed to where i can make an ethical kill at 50yds thanks for any and all help. Brandon.

Bheads fixed, jus don't hit exactly he same as the field pts. Mech. are better at that match up. When i shoot a fixed head i sight in usin it not the field pts. I use combo's that wouldn't do fer yer set up. 2219's in alum. wid 2" Blasers -3" SK300's same vanes but i have some old GTII's, i have some BEES, carbons have the heavier brass inserts

The most accurate and the sharpest broadhead I've used to date is the G5 Striker.
I haven't killed anything with it yet, but the Toxic is super accurate as well and I can't see how it wouldn't leave a great blood trail. Accuracy first.
Very few broadhead hit the same point of impact as field points. The Toxic did for me and the Strikers seem to just hit a bit high. Perrosnally, o don't care. I just adjust my scope.

Boo,
I've never seen, or at least remember, you ever posting any comments about the FOC. Your thoughts?

I've switched from firebolts to spine indexed bees with 90 grain brass inserts, 125 gr slicktricks and sk300 vanes. They fly great out of my ibex. The slick trick blades are made by luntz in Germany as are the G5 strikers. Boos right, they are the sharpest blades I've ever seen also. Jefro

Stock fire bolts or diablos will fly the best with the 150 Excalibur Boltcutters.
If you upgrade at some point to better shafts with 100/110gr brass inserts then go to the 100 gr G5 Strikers Boo mentions as they are tough and fly great out to 100 yards for me. I have killed a lot of stuff with these from hogs to moose they are the the best for high speed accuracy I have found. I buy them buy the dozen just like shafts.

I want high FOC for broadheads. Flight and penitration are both enhanced as you go up. Donno if there's deminished returns but I like seeing a ballpark 18% or more.

Yes. I'm using 50g AL inserts, Jerry's new Spynal Tapp shafts(from defletched factory fletched STs), 18", spine indexed, plastic flat nocks, helical Blazers (AZ EZ - F Bolt). Light on rear (plastic flat nocks & Blazers) and moderately heavy on front(220g). 411.5g. 371'/sec on M405 with 40 strand 8190, Air Brakes. 358 on BD 400 , 347 on M380 with very heavy string(187g) with silencers, Air Brakes.
The FOCs /BD400 will be going bear hunting Sept 24-27. The M405 mostly deer hunting after that .

Guess one could accurately state that I want high FOC with FOCs.

Thank you Norm. Apparently ESL is on my horizon
Steve, the FOC obviously works well. The cut is big enough to cause instant and massive trama. You use and trust it, so I assume they have very good accuracy.
I like sharp, super accurate and tough fixed broadheads. It's just my preference.

According to multiple sources, including arrow manufacturers and competitive shooters, the downside to having too much weight forward of center is that your arrow will not fly with optimum trajectory but instead will experience premature nose diving.

On a 30 yard shot with a quick bow you likely won't have an issue. On your 50 yard shot from your Equinox, eh, you might begin to see a tad bit of nosediving if you get too extreme with FOC weighting. But keep it reasonable and you should be good.
