SEW wrote:Concerning spine indexing, I initially thought that with short, very stiff ( example: 18", zombies or STs), that spine indexing wasn't very critical as with longer arrows. It may not be for gentler launching xbows than my 380,400,405. My factory fletched STs which, of course, weren't spine indexed, don't compare to the same shafts, now spine indexed and helical Blazered. Even with these very stiff shafts there are significant stiff and weak sides. AND, with 260# and above, spine indexing makes quite a difference. I'd expect, as the launch force gets less, the benefits of spine indexing diminishes. But, the 380 and above , and the Micros, have a pretty harsh launch and spine indexing reduces group size.
From here on, I'll order either Zombies or double weave STs that are spine matched and indexed. Depending on cost, maybe even fletched. The arrows I've gotten from Boo, Big John and Jerry have all been class acts.
WELL SAID.......I am new to crossbows but read a lot and shoot to find out WHY something does not work...Me and big pard had trouble with factory GT 425 arrows at .005 in 18 inch length in micros...I spents weeks reading here and shooting ,resquaring, turning vanes etc ..

Then i took my 16.5 inch quills and shot and said why are they shooting better than the GT arrows? What you said is correct ....the Quills are stiffer than the gt arrows, you could take your hand and bend the gt 425 arrows you could not with quills..

power of micro may not like a 18 inch .005 arrow that flexes more than a stiffer arrow...I saw that with 16.5 Quill arrows that are .005 but stiffer ..

BORKHOLDER backs their arrows they have been very good to me and Big PARD .Most likely they do not know a .005 arrow at 18 inch MAY not shoot as well as a 16 inch arrow from MICRO which is stiffer quills ..My shooting proved that stiffer/shorter arrow shoots well at same .005 straightness.....

I called Loren at Borkholder about difference in shorter arrow..I noticed at club others were shooting crossbows with .005 arrows and longer arrows and good groups BUT none had a MICRO ...

I think you said it right on .........

It must be getting close to hunting season because Dan is an arrow expert again. Trying to drum up some sales, is my bet.

The point SEW was making was that you probably don't shoot a bow that would show where spine indexing will make a difference. It certainly does make a difference at longer range and from a heavy draw bow - I have seen it first hand, unlike you who offers up as evidence a 50y test, from a lighter drawing bow.

For hunting purposes, and keeping shots under 50y, you won't see much difference from spine indexing arrows.
Im guessing you have something personal against Dan? Thats your business. What I can comment on is Ive bought a bow, arrows and strings from Dan. Everything Ive got from him was top notch and better than expected. I have his strings on my Kodabow Scout, my Micro and I had one on my 405 ( before I cut it down) for over 500 shots and the serving still looks great. The arrows he made me for the Micro fly as good as any Ive ever bought from anyone. He has always took time to answer any questions Ive had and has always given me good advice. I build a lot of my arrows and have everything I need to do so. I actually sent him a PM this morning wanting to find out if he had time to build me a couple more Matrix strings. I for one hope he is trying to "sell something" because I need something.

All I know is that my spine index custom arrows did not fly well at 40 yards. Perhaps they were not indexed properly, or perhaps the spine was too weak for the micro 335. I wonder if you are better off shooting a shorter Arrow due to the higher poundage and shorter power stroke of the micros.

I made my own arrows for the past 40 or so years but now since going to crossbows usually just buy factory BEEs and/or Zombie Slayers off eBay. I can buy the .001s for a tad less than I can buy the bare shafts plus shipping so why not. I shoot under 360 FPS with all my bows and do not shoot over 50 yards usually. I do have some of Jerry's double wall spynal tapps and the factory arrows shoot the same POI at 40 yards they do. I still refletch my own arrows when needed though.

By my count, Dan had three threads going today where he asserts his opinions on arrows over other people that I consider to be more qualified. I'm very happy to hear he's not selling something.

I better brush up on the forum rules. I wasn't aware there was a limit on how many threads you are allowed to give your opinion on. My bad!!

I don't knowed whats goin on about all these bad arrows. Last yr i got my Micro jus before goin over to the Mo. Gatherin. I had the stock quills that came wid it n a dz. of my old GT II's 20" from my Vixen. Captain Morgan was not fussy about his arrows not the weight or vanes length. He shot wid the best there in the shott out fer all the Marbles in the pot n took it ! :)

That is why i my topic on using 18 inch arrows in micros.could it be they are not matched properly i do not know.reading on other forums some are having problems with arrows not grouping with others too...

could micro not like 18 inch arrow with less stiff spine ...heck if i know but 2 of us got bad groups with 18 inch gt arrows that were spine matched yet my quills at 16.5 inch grouped good and they were not spine matched...

I don't knowed about y'alls arrows i had none of them in my hands to really ck out. I used o go down to awshucks fer 3-5 days at a time n he would show me how he used a dial indicator n an arrow spinner wid ball bearin's. He would sort out all the arrows he had bought n put them in groups to shoot them. He would grin at me his eyes sparklin in mischief , n say to me lets see how you get yer arrows ready fer the 3D shoots we would go to. Heck i would take me a couple dz pts n me arrows n go to work hand spinnin n such. He be not here now but if'en he were he would tell you that old coon wins every 3D shoot we went to in several states. Durn we sure had some great times :)
