Quill Arrow Accuracy

Post by va3cgt »

I was out this afternoon sighting in my Micro 335 with factory Quill arrows and 150gn field points. Total arrow weight is about 400 grains. From a bench rest, these arrows are not that accurate. I mean they are good enough for hunting but if my memory serves me correctly I read on this forum that the excalibur quills were not that accurate to begin with (straightness). Some pull to the left. Some pull to the right. Some higher and some lower on target at 20 yards. Using the rope cocker and no I don't have any split or cracked limbs. What do ya think? Is it the shooter?

....one of the most prevalent issues are potentially loose screws on the scope. Please make sure that they are snug....as much as we have our opinions on BEA's versus Quills and Diablo's I do not believe you should be having those kinds of issues at 20yds....and yes it could be some shooter error involved!

Hmmm. How susceptible are the quills to a light breeze? It was kinda windy but took the shot when the wind died down.

Maybe I have a bad arrow....I kept using the same one

mark a cock vane. Shoot rotate and repeat until you find what vane gives you same hole shot after shot. Do this with all your quills.
Then mark that vane as your cock vane. The problem is most likely the spine with the quills.

Hi there,I was reading forum on Quill accuracy, noticed 1 of my arrows that came with package consistently shoots a little higher, should I try a different cock vane?I have the cock vane marked on my arrows,
Or is it common for Quill arrows to have a bit of
F variance?
Oh I did weigh arrows and field points, they are all the same. Thanks

I have found that shooting off a hard surface from a bench rest does not produce ideal groups because of the crossbows recoil.

I do find improved groups when using a softer sand filled Bunny Ear bag under the forearm with finger and hand support from a bench rest.

150 grain points
3 arrows 2 inch group at 30 and 40 yards than 1 arrow 3 to 4 inches high ,time after time
It's no big deal but you have to try all your arrows to see what's what

Yep trying different cock vane made all the difference, put all 8 arrows within in hand half of bullseye at 40 yards.
Had to try different cock vane on 1 of 3 quill lumenoks also ,bang on at 40,
Don't want to try broadheads yet, need a target that will hold a broadhead from blowing through to quills, found out the hard way. Cheers

That may also be loose trigger bolts.
They should be pretty good from bench.
I personally would take the stock off, tighten trigger screws
then put stock on, tighten them screws, then tighten all scope mount screws, scope screws, check all rest of the bow hardware. Then try shooting again. If same problem exists then maybe arrows need to be indexed according to marking fletch system. But, these arrows should work fairly good out to 40 yds.

I have shot arrows with no fletching to 50 yards (w field points) and still maintained reasonably good accuracy.

....EVERY time I have accuracy issues it is a loose screw!
