personal bucket list and being careful

Post by Buszone »

I'm sure when it comes to hunting we all have a bucket list of hunts we dream of doing. I have been fortunate to clear my list except for a speed goat. A dear friend of mine and accomplished hunter and big game guide long dreamed of hunting elk in the rocky mtns. when I did my hunt 4 years ago he had to know all the details gear, training pictures just every little detail. Well, he finally went this past week to Rocky's to get his elk. He is in mid 50's and a former tri athlete, crazy right! Well my friend came down with altitude sickness and died in his sleep after several days of living his dream. I guess as age catches up to us maybe something's should just remain on our bucket list. Then again he was living in the now and there are no promises for tomorrow. We will miss him greatly as he has a great soul.

Sorry to hear that, 30 yrs too soon. However, there should be comfort in knowing he died doing what he loved, probably dreaming of that big 6x6 coming in. May he chase elk in the clouds until you hunt together again some day.

That certainly is sad news. But let's be honest, what a way to go. At least it wasn't behind some desk in a stuffy office. Living the dream and passing in your sleep. He certainly was a blessed man. I'm sure that he was an amazing person and will be sorely missed.

Prayers to his family and friends.

VERY sorry to hear about your good friend. When I was 25 I went skiing in the Rocky's and came down with altitude sickness. By the time I got to the hospital the doctor told me I would have drowned in fluid within 24 hours....it is nothing to mess around with. Know the symptoms before you plan on heading to high altitude. Safe hunting.

The crazy part is yesterday was his birthday ... and he just ran a senior marathon 3 months ago... there are no guarantees so enjoy life everyday. thanks for all the well wishes his name was Wessel Lubbe a south African who immigrated here with his wife and 2 children when the new government confiscated the family wildlife ranch. He hunted and shot everything from elephants to whitetails and always heard how the elk was the ultimate game animal ..well he will get to hunt them forever.

He sounds like an amazing person who would have been great to listen to around the campfire. May his skies always be blue and his elk a minimum of 6x6.

Sorry for your loss indeed.

I'd love to do a brown bear hunt on Kodiak Island. For me, that would be the ultimate hunt with a bow and arrow. I'd like to take my recurve and my crossbow with me and see if I had the nerves to get within recurve distance or if I'd "settle" for a shot with the crossbow. I wouldn't want a guide with a gun backing me up either. Just me and the bear. I know, easy to say that now.
