About a month before the rut, bucks seem to take off for a short bit and check out new grounds, almost like a scouting mission. I wonder if that's what he was doing. Awesome deer, man. Very cool.

Yes, I'm definitely getting him mounted...after Africa, the wife just shook her head and said, " I knew you were going to shoot something big if you went out!". lol My taxidermist is LOVING me lately!

I agree, I think this buck was just cruising and making his presence known. We have 5 trail cams out on this property, three over mineral licks and two buy major scrapes so I would think over three years we would have seen him. I'm really starting to like hunting large, low hanging branches over an open field along a wood edge. All of the big bucks we have seen or shot have been early October and hitting the licking branches.
