Hi guys,
I was given a recurve bow to finish building for my bows for kids program and I am a bit stumped with this one. The bow is 4' 8" long and the limbs are 1-7/8" wide and 3/16" thick. Can any one tell me how long a string I need with a standard brace of 6" and a guess at the draw weight? Thanks
Hank

Re: recurve bow build
I wouldmock up a 53 1/2-54" string on a 56" long recurve n see how the brace ht is
Re: recurve bow build
The lower your brace height the more likely you are to get some nasty wrist slap, and 6" is pretty low for a recurve. Frankly I would shoot for 7" to 8" and see where vibration was the least.
If you buy a string rather than tie one yourself, ask the string builder how many twists are in it for a given length. About 35 twists will let you change brace height in either direction from where it starts out. Beware, some string builders measure their strings with 0 twists in them so you can only shorten the string and increase brace height.
If I was tying a string for a 56" recurve that had no history, I would start with a string length of 53" and twist it up until the bow tuned good. Most of my traditional bows have two different places they tune well, but I always seem to choose the one closest to 7.5".
I'll measure my limb thicknesses when I get home and let you guess from there about poundage. Lol.

Re: recurve bow build
As a general rule a recurve usually has a string 4 inches shorter than the straite line groove to groove as the others said a higher brace height would definitely benefit a kid with less arm slap .

50# Kodiak Magnum has 3/16" thick limbs (maple/fiberglass)
55# Damon Howatt Stealth has 1/4" thick limbs (zebrawood laminated)
55# Hoyt Tiburon has 5/32" thick limbs (maple/fiberglass/carbon, I think)
I measured these with a tape measure, not a caliper.

I sanded and basically stripped my favorite martin longbow about ten years ago i used deft satin outdoor urethane spray the bows been thru hell n back and the finish looks new. Deft is not expensive either.I highly recommend it if your wondering what to coat it with.

On string length , you can make a "try" string with a loop at one end and tie a bowlers knot in other to come up with the length you want. Just a thought
