camo dip done.. and scored??

Post by xbowrook »

as i mentioned i wanted to do a spray paint camo dip on the buck skull i shot yesterday... so here it is... first pic is of the first step.. skinned out the skull and boiled in water and dish soap for 4-6 hours.. took it out every hour or so and power washed it... then i wrapped the antlers for cleanliness and protection and sprayed the base coat on... let it dry then dipped it... i used a brown for the base then used brown, green and cream for the dip colors.. here are the pics.. didn't turn out exactly as the videos but it's my first time and overall i think i like it... it will take some practice but i will get it down.. lol.. also, i printed off a score sheet and scored it but i think i messed up somewhere... i scored it at 155 3/8"... but there is no way this is a 155 " deer...lol.. i will get someone who's done it more to score it for me.. also hard to do when the paint is still wet.. anyways, here are the pics.. enjoy..

Nice, score is believable.

I'm guessing somewhere between 120-130" but who cares, nice work.

Looks good! Do they sell a low gloss version of the dip?

That is a nice rack for sure.
Paint job looks terrible to me.

I think it would look a lot better with flat paint. I don't dig gloss paint on anything though.

it's actually not a dip.. you just use a large tote of water ( warm, not too cold) and use oil based spray paint.. spray the paint ( whatever colors and as many colors as you want) into the water and vary the colors.. once you get a lot of paint in the water you use a plastic fork or a piece of wood or something and swirl it.. once you get it the way you like, you slowly dip the skull into the mixture... it is on youtube.. just search camo spray paint deer skulls and a bunch of them come up...

that's alright, it's not for everybody.. the picture doesn't actually do it justice, it looks a fair bit better in person... none the less i like it which is all that really matters..

Ok...I scored it with better tools and got more realistic results... this is a green score as the 60 day drying period hasn't passed yet...gross was 126 5/8" and netted was 120 2/8".... knew it wasn't a 155 class deer...a trophy to me none the less
