Crossbow scope what one

Post by Phillyarcher »

Question for all you knowledgeable guys on here. I have a Micro 335 and the stock scope that came with it. I have taken 4 deer this year so far and it's pretty good. I see there has been other guys talking about the better scopes.I'm not real knowaledable about scopes. So what would you guys upgrade too for the Micro 335. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

As suggested for the price and clairity, as well as warranty, the Nikon Bolt can't be beat... at about $150-$160

If illumination is required ? I have read where many feel the Hawke XB-1 is a good choice.

I chose the Hawke 1x5 XB30 Pro SR which was a bit more $, but I'm totally satisified with it on both my Micro 335 and Matrix 380.

There are several great Crossbow specific models including Leupold Crossbones ( I have one of those in reserve ) and those offered by Zeiss and Vortex. Do a bit of research and see which best fits your needs...

( I went thru Varizone, Deadzone, Nikon Bolt and Leupold before settliing on the Hawk XB30's ... My type of search became pretty expensive.)

The bolt has no speed ring is dialed in at 305 fps your micro is probably shooting at 310 just gue ssing ..should be pretty much spot on . I have one one my m 330 spot on all yardages love it. The leupold cross bones is better if you have a little more money to spend with a speed ring . I have both hard to beat either one. I like the bones about 30 percent better.thats it ! You will be happier with the clarity of either one

While I have Leupold's on most of my rifles, I don't on my 380.
Don't like the fact that their "ballistic reticle" only goes to 60 yards effectively.
Were they to incorporate one that makes 100 yards, I would be biting.
I know about HHA's, but if you knew how damn HARD I am on equipment, you'd likely understand why that's a bit of a non-starter for me.

The Hawke XB 30 Compact is no longer made, but they do make similar.
They offer chevrons to 100 yards, and two color options & many power settings for illumination.
Like them in the low light, and really like just how damn tough they are.
Mine actually has scars...

Cheers,

My search brought me to 3 choices. I didn't want illuminated reticle so I looked at Nikon, leupold and zeiss. The Nikon didn't have the speed adjustment so between the leupold and the zeiss I chose the zeiss. I like the reticle having the yardage and it's good out to 75 yards. It was also on sale at cabelas for 50 bucks cheaper than the leupold. It was technically a Christmas present so I have yet to try it out. Looking through it's super clear. I got it mounted and ready to try out. Others have talked about the lousy screws on Excalibur scope rings. I picked up different socket head screws and turned down the heads to fit the scope rings.

I don't want to hijack the OP's thread, but will try to jump on this post with the same question, however, I have a more limited amount of choices here in Canada.

I have the Matrix 350LE with the "deadzone" scope and although it is fine so far and works well, I am slowly looking to upgrade.

My choices that I can find in Canada are:

Nikon Bolt - $199 plus the usual taxes etc.
Leupold Crossbones - $391
Redfield Revenge 2-7 ABS Crossbow - $264 +
Hawk IR SR 1.5-5x32 - $281 +
Zeiss Terra 2-7x32 XB75 Demo - $469 +

My budget right now is a max of $300, so the Leupold and Zeiss are out.

I have done the searches on here and everywhere else and I am leaning towards the Nikon. What's everyone thoughts??

Do I go with the Nikon (or one of the others) or stick with the Deadzone and save the $$$ for other stuff or to upgrade to the Leupold or Zeiss down the road??

Cheers

If you do choose the Nikon you will have an Excellent scope with a lifetime warranty, an great glass quality that is IMO better than the quality of any scope offered in a "Package Deal" by Excalibur.....

The NIKON has No Speed ring, nor Speed Adjustability, and is manufactured to closely work on bows in the 300 fps range.( Your 350 will be higher even with 400 gn arrows )

You will have to access their "Spot On Calculator" which takes both arrow speed and weight into the equation to give you shot distances that will correlate to the aiming referance points in the scope as they relate to your bow and it's given arrow speed .

I would go for the best Hawke XB model you can find and afford.... I would be surprised that you could not find a XB30 Pro up there in Canada on "Special" or possibly in one of the classified sections of the many Xbow forums, even though you nearly ever hear of anyone letting go of one... I have seen them there.

I have two and am totally satisified with mine.

The Nikon on the 350 LE will never line up correctly at 20-30-40-50, etc. as it had no speed dial unless you are shooting a VERY heavy arrow to really slow it down. You can use the ballistic calculator as mentioned and try to remember that it is 20-33-45-54 etc. when you have a buck in your sights. I would look at one of the other choices using a speed ring that you can dial in.

I do shoot if 350 LE.

Look hard at the Hawke, Zeiss and Leupold scopes. I use a Vortex Viper XBR on mine but they are expensive and hard to find. Best glass out there though.

I think after trying so many the best for me anyways are the Hawke Scopes, hands down! The XB-30 Pro SR is without doubt one tough scope that will take a beating in almost 3 years never changed it's zero, the speed ring (zoom) will dial the scope in spit on for any bow at any speed, and can be used for a 30 yard or the standard 20 yard zero on the main dial. The most versatile scope out there in my opinion for crossbows with the best glass at this time, and set and forget.

On a smaller bow like the Micro I would probably give up some optical quality and brightness in low light for the XB1,, I have both and both have been 100% reliable!

I have one other preference for sighting on my crossbows and that's the reflex sights a single red dot with no magnification. On a Micro or Suppressor using the top center and bottom of a 3 moa, or an 8 moa dot for different yardages, makes me the lightest handiest setup with unlimited eye relief, no parallax, and 1.3 oz. in total weight.

It is great to have choices but these three setups are what I prefer at this time, and all 3 have proven 100% reliable and durable.

.
This above

I have one on my Matrix and love it. When I have shot at a deer and forgot to turn on the illumination because I'm in a hurry to get the shot off or just flat out forget, it is not a problem. The great thing about this scope is that you don't need the illumination but it is nice to have if you remember to turn it on or are target practicing or sighting in. A great scope and super bright and clear. When I bought mine a few years ago David at Wyverns had them at a very low sale price. You may want to give him a call to see what he has, at minimum he is a guy that will give you some honest advice.
