Did you use a bait pile to harvest your deer in 2016

Post by tracer »

I noticed a lot of guys used corn piles and where successful.
Apples where another common lure.
Noted: Baiting is not legal in some States and Provinces .
Please mention here if you used a legal scent of any kind.

Thanks for your participation

Sugar beats are golden for late season in Michigan..
A touch of frost has heightened your awareness and your heart steadily beats in anticipation. Your senses are suddenly alert to the movement on the forest floor and you realize that the moment of truth is at hand.

Baiting is not allowed in Pa but in Southeast Region of state. You have to use mechanical feeders and you must have a permit. When we were allowed to bait using other baits I used Agway deer corn which was coated with molasses, this worked real well. When placed on ground they would dig holes were it was placed. I do not use anything right now but my grunt tube with different settings. Feeders are to noisey and the big Bucks go nocturnal from guys I know that use them .

sproulman wrote:Like said baiting is illegal and unethical in nc pa...Better for can hunts on tv with hunters that cant hunt..lol..I know some that lost their licenses and BIg fines for baiting this year ..I was proud to turn these poachers in..I wish they would put their pictures in paper and post office..
Just stop Sproul......your thinking is generally outdated and limited to your experiences in your tiny spec of PA...which I might add does not reflect the majority of the thinking across the country.

Nothing wrong with baiting...but my experience is that it doesn't help all that much. With feeders, they get very very wary and go nocturnal at the drop of a hat. And with piles they seem to just hit them whenever it's convenient. I've certainly not experienced any "dinner bell" type of activity...but some have.

If it's legal, do what you like to do.

Almost every hunter uses bait of some type. Even if you are only hunting section of woods between a bedding area and a feeding area, hunting a feild, using a decoy during rut, scents, calls, etc. They are all attractants, that's what good hunters do

In my experience of using a "bait pile", Deer use it at night if at all. I have only shot one deer while at a pile. but I could have shoot endless squirrels and raccoons! I have shot many more deer using the other methods. The pile is the least effective of the above list in my honest opinion.

to keep more on topic, I have used salt, carrots, apples, pears and corn. molasses and grain. Pumpkins too. Come to think of it, I did shoot a doe who came to investigate the pumpkin I had just placed out in a field. So, I shot 2 deer using food bait, even tho that doe had no idea the pumkin was food, she was just too curious for her own good.

The OP is right this is not a debate of weather or not something is ethical .
I have and do use simple corn . I have harvested bucks and does on my corn .
Neil is right . What is the real difference between a food plot and bait ? Bait and a Buck Bomb .
Enough of the old mentality of my grandpappy said this is the only way to hunt .
If it is legal and you want to do something then have at it .

In my state of Oklahoma baiting is illegal on Public land but legal on private land. I have established a few mineral licks on Public land because that is legal and I get good deer pics over them. I have hunted over the mineral licks but have never killed a deer over them to date. That said I am still trying and hope to score next season.

I did put out one deer corn feeder on a friends place and hope to kill deer there next year as well. He wants them thinned out because they are damaging his garden and landscape vegetation.

I have no problem hunting over bait. I'm in it for the meat and anything I can legally do to improve my chances I will do.
