Favorite ladder stand

Post by ihavethetools »

Looking for some suggestions on a ladder stand. Whats your favorite and why ? Getting ready to turn 62 yrs young and luckily have a young son-in-law that can help me put it up. Also what's your favorite height ? Have used hang on's in the past but they are getting more difficult for me to hang. Thanks for your thoughts.

I have the Millennium L220-2 man ladder stand. I go 300 lbs toting all my equipment and extra stuff...this stand is big with a big platform and comfy seat.
Even the ladder itself is double tube making it rock steady.
Overkill? Maybe, but at 67 years old I want rock steady.
Expensive but worth it in my opinion.

If you need a lightweight one person ladder stand and price is not a concern the leverage telescoping ladder blows all away (see you tube) or website i have one and love it . Its a tad heavy to transport for a day hunt. Otherwise the 49.95 dicks sporting goods ladder is tough to beat l have 9 of em scattered in my areas here lol. If some one steals one its not a bank breaker

I like stands at least 18' tall and have one at 22'! Remember to use a safety lifeline with a HSS vest.
I also buy stands with a rifle rest and then wrap burlap on it to hide me.Works great as deer will walk right up.
I had 4 stands cut up with a battery operated sawzall.
If they want the stand they'll get it or wreck it.

My favorite stand is a 20' ladder stand that has a flip up seat and a shooting rail. The flip up seat is nice when I want to stand up for a while. I don't often use the shooting rail as a rest, but I use it to conceal myself by hanging camo netting from it.
Still lovin' my EXCALIBUR MICRO 355! :-)

I do not hunt much from ladder stands but do have a 20' double rail one like the one Sportsman's Guide sells up on a pretty inaccessible ridge on my club. I am pretty certain my brother and I hung this stand up 20 years ago and the back bar has grown into the tree now so there is no way to move it. Otherwise it is still going strong and is still safe to hunt out of.

I have a couple of the Two man Ameristep ones made for Walmart, usually always on sale for $99US. The exact same stand bought elsewhere is around $150 and does not have a cushioned back rest.

For me, the most important part is that it's a Two Man stand, I love the extra room to put my gear.

I have 4, ameristep ladder stands, they are 15 ft. to the standing platform, they have been up ever since I fell, they have a shooting rail which I love ,They cost me $ 65.00 each on a wal mart clearance sale, I also have a tri pod stand with a swivel seat, and I absolutely love it, it is time consuming to move, and it is heavy for this 74 yr. old man but with a little Ozark enginuity it's pretty simple. it is absolutely my favorite.. :D

On publicland for archery ladderstands are useless...People will piss or no.2 under them ,steal them or just twist them and sit near you..

Now for gun season they are fine on Publicland if not put up early to let everyone know your spot ..

2 views to this..I n gun only I like 2 man stand. You can lay your stuff on it and if tired you can walk back/forth and lay sideways ..

being up above 15 ft is not necessary because your shots are not close .You want below the tree canopy if not you will see only limbs at 50 yards ..So big 2 man is best in cold and if you are over 60 like me ..

NOW on to archery forget a ladderstand UNLESS you are on privateland.
If so get one 18 ft long ..
I like only ones with web seat or way to use my summit climber seat ..
metal seat is for young hunters with good backs .now there is way to use your smaller room stand like joe longbow showed for gun season if it has metal seat..

I use my SUMMIT CLIMBER TOP and bring it out of woods daily.its light just carrying in my top. :D :D :D

this gives me a GREAT seat with rail around me for bow/gun to layon ..QUICK to pull up on buck with bow laying there or gun.
HERE is best I can take my naps without worrying about falling out of ladder stand .i like nap around 10 am to 11;;30 am and killed many nice bucks at 11;30 am when i woke up..
So drop me PM and give me your phone no and you will learn a wealth of knowledge..
inventor of dead sound climber technology that Summit now uses ontheir stands and expert of what works hunting Buck in state of pa PUBLICLAND..

You are on privateland just think what we go thru here in publicland..A hunter found my spot and sat 50 yards from me he got 8 point first morning at 8 am..He even said he was going to sit near me he saw me in archery in that spot..81 years young.

You are right cheap stands no one wants now ..they will just tear them down..You idea with big thick chains is GREAT .Make sure lock is one that cannot be cut ..BUT those cut off saws will cut chain in about 3 minutes with rechargeable battery..now they say if you leave your stands 2 weeks after season close its LITTER..That is good rule I see stands all over now on publicland they leave them up so they can say SPROUL THIS IS MY SPOT EVEN THO YOU HAVE 53 YEARS IN THIS SPOT.. Oh young hunters are such great hunters.lol..

anyhow you have good ideas BUT unless i use my summit seat there is no way I could sit in your stand for more than 2 hrs..

Only treestands I use are ladder stands.I always take one section out so I am about 10 feet up.Have deer go by me and under me all the time.I just don't like to go up higher. As to brand I try to get the stands that have a metal platform and I like to use my own seat cusion on it.Lots of the newer ones have those mesh seats now.I personally don't like em.Had a seat on a muddy melt during burn season.Try to replace the seat? Muddy treestands or Biggame treestands there are no parts you can order .Yup that's right .Even if you lose a screw or need any part at all for those 2 brands. So if you buy those brands make sure you have all the parts when you put it together so you can take it back to the store if missing something..I now own a muddy that's useless cause no seat.I tried a after market I think slumber seat and It don't fit right so my one year old stand is now junk. :( Shame too as its a nice stand.Anyway I bought a Biggame warrior to replace it as it has a steel platform. Those new Summit ladder stands look good but no experience with them. One thing too whatever you buy try to stay away from those ladders that the steps are very narrow. You may have trouble putting both feet on the same step. Most of my treestands are the biggame but the older ones.I do have one riversedge but its pretty uncomfortable for long sits. With the crossbow I like the ones with the rail. For rifle I don't care. Those Hawk treestand blinds to hide you if you move work pretty good too with em.I tried one out this past year.Hope this helps some.

Ladder stands are good choice these days there are a lot to pic from. One of my hunting buddies has a bunch of the Dicks's one's like LongbowJoe mentioned. They work great and for under $50. Bucks you can not go wrong. Now we have as few of them on some of the properties I hunt. What we have done is buy the extension section which gives you some more height. The only problem is that the older ones we have you can not get the extensions anymore. They went from 20" down to 14" wide ladders these are the Dicks ones they sell. I also have a couple of Buddy Boy stands and the extra room is great. A lot easier to recock your xbow. I'm also getting up there in age and these are definitely a lot easier to get in and out. Make sure you still use a safety line and harness. Good luck with your decision.

Lots of great thoughts guys. I've been looking online and the choices and features and prices are all over the place. I'll probably end up buying two, one for public land I hunt near me. Not many hunters in this area and I know almost all of them. The other will be on private land and I feel real safe that no one will be taking that one. 15' - 18' will be the height I'll be looking for and for me a shooting rail would be important. I'll probably end up getting a "cheaper" model for the public land and maybe a little pricier one for the private land. Until I started searching online I didn't realize how many different manufacturers are out there. More thoughts and recommendations are welcome. Thanks, Dave
