Yep, someone thought that was all you need, and probably had to satisfy a group of nonhunters with a safety statistic that is bunk.

Wow that's dumb, a 200lb recurve is shooting what? 330fps max? What about a compound? You guys are right, the people making these laws around crossbows know nothing about them and hunting in general

They are idiots if coarse never hunted or worked a day in their life. Is this a blanket limit , or just for recurves?

Do they know the fastest bow on the planet is only 175# draw?

No, they don't. Likely, a significant percentage are not even aware of the difference between compound and recurve xbows. Likely, this is some part of a capitulation to vertical bow people, who likely do know.
They also likely don't know the speed difference of a 100# Scorpyd vs a#225 Excal, both of which are illegal for being under or over.
Similar things happen in the gun world: 25-06 being illegal for a lot of game that the 300 Whisper or 30cal carbine is legal for.
So they pick the easiest thing to check: caliber or draw weight.

Has anyone on this forum ever seen a crossbow scale? If the answer is no, which I can pretty much assure it is, then I can guarantee no conservation officer has ever seen one let, alone carried one afield like they're standard issue. This is the kind of law that scares a hunter to comply but that a CO would never have the wherewithal to see if you have complied. If I hunted in NYS I'd use whatever I had and if a label had a speed posted on it, I'd remove it and make them do the "forensics."

Why would they need a scale? All game wardens have cell phones and computers in their truck. It pretty easy to look a bow up and see how many pounds it is. Whether or not they strictly enforce the law or not is a whole different story.
Bows get customized all the time - none of mine have a brand name or serial number on them, or the name on the sticker doesn't match what I'm actually shooting. If I'd have kept the sticker, my 405 would show it's a Vixen! No amount of internet time would net the CO any info he could use on me which is why I'm pretty sure he'd need a scale to make a charge like that stick. It's kind of like saying a Corvette is guilty of speeding just because it looks fast. IMHO, this is the kind of law that scares people into compliance because it's not enforceable. Has anyone ever seen/heard of a charge being laid in that state over it?

I think maybe they set a 200 lb limit because they were looking at compound crossbows and did not even consider the fact that it takes more poundage to get speed out of a recurve crossbow. And that is assuming they even knew there are recurve crossbows.
Are there any compound crossbows that pull over 200 lbs?

Sorry I am going to date myself here.

I can remember when most States would not even look at crossbows, let alone allow then to be used for hunting. Now, New York State was so defient and had so much anti crossbow pressure it was said the New York would never allow them.

Most States that had a 200lb limit have eliminated it. It probably will take a longer time for NY to realize their error, or better yet, acknowledge it.
