I'd say a 35 Whelen would be up to the task. Our bear/deer season for bow opens ~24 Sep. Normally, bear are primarily nocturnal within 3 days. Just don't like people.
So, a bow it is. I've only lost 1 other bear: the game and fish people say it's the same one. 6 years ago. Double lung or nothing is a great rule.
I plan to end the saga with this bear next Sept: 7 years after it started. He tried to tear my treestand down with me in it after I shot him 6 years ago. Bear spray works!! Model 29 stayed holstered. Saved a lot of explaining.

I have to agree with Joe. If it's a problem, then resolve it as efficiently as possible. Sport is different situation.
Personally I would do a Mozambique Drill on it with my SP10 or one of my other mashers. Can't be too safe you know!   With a problem bear, I want it dead so fast, there's no death moan!

Actually...

What I use to hunt with IS a bit of a dilemma for the reasons listed above.

While my first instinct was to use my Excal, this isn't a "normal" sport hunt.

This bear, and now the second one, have been disrupting our deer hunting for several years now.

They are pounding the deer bait sites and running the deer off.

This past season I had to back out of my bow stand with my concealed carry handgun pulled 3 times because the bear wouldn't leave the deer bait site in-spite of me making noise and waving around at him.

SO, we NEED to take one, or eventually both, of them out and this year I'm the ONLY one in our group with a tag.

AND, we haven't been able to get him the last time one of our guys had a tag.

I'll probably wait to see how the baiting is going and decide then.

Would prefer to use my Excal, but my .45 smokeless muzzleloader will do just fine too. I'll have a little over a month to hunt. (on and off of course)

SEW: I've shot 3 other black bears with Vbows, absolutely agree Steve, biggest fixed broadheads you can accurately shoot!!

Our first "gun" bear season is MLing, the 3rd weekend of Oct. 2 problems:1) bear are almost totally nocturnal by this time and 2) the zone limit is 150 bear, which is almost always reached by the 2nd day of archery bear season(as it was this year) and rarely the third day is still open for hunting.
I've made my mistakes bear hunting, but have certainly learned some lessons. I plan on having a picture of this bear "dead" this September.

This is the bear.

Sew, that's a great bear! Rich, if you're shooting him from your stand, what's the furthest shot you could expect and which crossbow would you use? If you're expecting a shot of forty yards or less and you're shooting one of the heavy hitters I say setup with a Toxic and only take a broadside or very slight quartering away shot and put one in the boiler room. I'm confident you would have a very short, very bloody trail for recovery.

Have taken to many Bears to remember! In the beginning I stalked them with 30:06 Rifle. Then a couple with Slugs from Shotgun. All of the rest with Fixed Broadheads. The last 8 with Slicktricks! The just seem to buzz right thru Bears!!! 8)
Good Luck on getting those Bears this season!

By the way, this season I'm going in with 125 gr. Toxics!
And bringing extra in case anyone wants to use as well.
Thanks for testing and reporting them Paul. 8)

Good luck with the bear. I would suggest a heavy arrow with a fixed head. Take a large caliber handgun along to play it safe. I would rather pay a fine than the ultimate price.
