Broad Heads Decisions Bear Hunt

Post by [email protected] »

OK, this is a tired subject and I read alot of posts on here and am still undecided. So here is the situation. I have a Micro 315 and harvested a deer with the X Act mechanicals.I have been using the 100 grain field tips with this bow and it doesn't seem to mind. Since then I got a Suppressor and it has only seen the 150 grain and both bows shoot very accurate. Both are shooting Quills.I have a bear hunt scheduled and need to decide, the 315 with mechanicals or the Suppressor with Bolt Cutter fixed blade. For now I am keeping it simple and Excalibur.

I shot my 2016 bear with my Micro 315 with the 125gr Exodus broad-head. It went down in less than 20yards. Complete double lung pass through is the ticket. Will be using them again this season..:)

Good luck and have a great hunt..

I've taken a few bears with the Bolt cutters. All have been quick humane kills. Wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

Im a big fan of the expandable for deer but the boltcutter has gotten me 3 bear all 50 yard n under recovery hard to beat. Any small compact broadhead will be fine as mentioned above the exodus looks good also.lf your using the quills the boltcutter will have more foc and weight being 150 grain. The slick trick is also available in 150 grain.Weight and a heavier bolt is the ticket for bear dont be afraid of adding a few grains. You can also go to a zombie or the like with a 110 insert. And a 100 or 125 head.
Vixen 2, metal ibex,Phoenix, sapphire, matrix 330 ,matrix 355 ,vortex and baby grand piano y25 relayer.
Trigger tecs, leupold crossbones and nikon bolts.
Zombie slayers and mostly swat broadheads.

I have not shot a Bear but have killed a dz wild hogs thru the yrs. Jus a good quality B-head that shoots accurate from yer model will do the job. Main thing wid heavier boned animals is don't get into the shoulder bone unless yer pushin a very heavy arrow

I got my first bear ever this past season with a Spitfire Maxx 100 grain. The bear only went 20 yards.

I shot my first Bear with a Vortex and my broadhead that I used was a Spitfire Max 125 grain and the arrows were the stock Firebolts. The Bear went about 35 yards. It's all about shot placement and your confidence. The both set ups you mentioned will get the job done. Hey can not wait to see the pics. Good Luck.

Thanks folks. It's going to be the Suppressor and Bolt Cutters. They hit much harder. I let you know how it works.

It worked. We headed out Saturday morning and showed up at Cooper Camp Saturday evening. Had a good meal, caught a few pike Sunday morning and after a good lunch headed out to the stand about 1;30 Sunday afternoon. I followed the guide out on my atv for about 15 miles of dirt road to the stand. I double and triple checked the turns but was still quite concerned about finding my way back to camp in the dark. They assured me no one had ever got lost before but I was pretty sure I'd be the first. The guides set me up and I crawled into the the stand 20 yards from the bait. I was told the bear would likely come from behind the bait but could come from behind me as well. It was a perfect sunny day with a good breeze coming and going. The bugs were bad but the breeze kept them from carrying me off. I got excited a few times by squirrels but no bear for 2 hours. Then I heard something to my right that didn't seem like a squirrel. I thought I smelled a bear but didn't really know what a bear smells like. I sat like a statue and waited, then the breeze stopped and there was only silence. I thought "oh well, I will have to find camp in the dark". About 2 minutes later a bear came out of the forest about 10 yards to my right and headed for the bait. He got to the bait and sat down and was eating before I fully processed what happened. I panicked. The shooting rail required a half sit half stand position and between my hyperventilating and conking the rail with my bow he looked right at me. I froze in the most inconvenient position and fortunately he was really hungry. After a 1 minute stare down he laid down and proceeded to eat. All the while the guides advice to not shoot while sitting and laying was being repeated in my head. I wanted to be cautious and only take a good shot. Then he stood up and started to check out the other goodies in the barrel. I went thru my check list and thought I'm on right where I want to shoot so I eased the trigger back. I didn't see the arrow hit but he jumped then seem to stumble as he was leaving. I thought I heard him crashing but the death moan came quickly. I waited a few minutes for the shakes to get less so I could safely climb down from the stand. He was about 10 yards from where I shot him. 160 pounds, nice coat and dead.

I used the suppressor with Boltcutter and Quill arrow. We all had a good time. I highly recommend Cooper for a hunt. The food will make you gain weight and the staff goes beyond expectations.

Great job on the bear. I agree when they come in you might be tempted to take a risky shot. You did great by waiting for the perfect shot... :)

Thanks and no I didn't get lost. By the time I left I saw that the fear was unfounded.
