Four fawns ?

Post by grouse »

I was up at my farm this morning sitting on my front porch talking on the phone when I saw a deer step out of the woods about 250 yards away across a cornfield. Eventually a total of five deer entered the field, a large doe and four fawns. I kept waiting for a second doe to appear but none ever did. The fawns romped around the field as the doe traveled about 100 yards along the edge. When she went back into the woods all four fawns followed.

I have seen does with triplets a few times before but never quads. There could have been a second doe that didn't leave the woods but stayed near the edge (as a possible explanation). Have any of you ever seen a doe raising four fawns? I hope I see them again.

I've read that deer know when their numbers are low and will have more twins and triplets, never heard of quads but anything is possible.

Their numbers are not low in our area, I see deer nearly every time I go up there, their are tracks anywhere there is mud, and hunting has been good (I killed three last year). We have good habitat and plenty of food (mixture of forests and cropland with ponds and creeks). It could also be that healthier deer are more prolific. I'll be up there picking blackberries this weekend and I would love to see those five deer again.

Behind the house we have 2 does that drop twins each year.
They travel together and you will see one doe with all four fawns every now and then
