well I guess I'm not entered but here's my story anyway. Disqualified due to no picture with bow and deer.

My season took place in northern Wisc. during the crossbow season 2017 but started in Arizona months before.
Buying tree stands and getting them shipped. Buying new spitfire broadheads and getting them shipped, you get the idea , lots of preparations going into the hunt months before the hunting can start. Watching weather reports and trying to make sure I'm prepared for all kinds of weather conditions. Typical stuff for anyone hunting out of state.

Ok, I actually make it to my inlaws , where I'll be staying and basically hunting 2 different pieces of private property, in the great northern woods of wisc. I'm here to tell you it's a bit different from hunting farm land, fields of food plots or baiting. It's not easy to pattern deer movements. Luckily the area holds good hardwoods mixed with pine groves , creeks and even swamps with plenty of acorns and other natural food to hold deer.

There was quite a mix of weather over the course of my 10 days of hunting. there were some warm sunny days, if you call 43 degrees warm. There were plenty of cold windy snowy days , where the temperatures dropped to single digits.
For anyone living in the northern U.S. or Canada , typical November weather. Where I live the weathers normally sunshine everyday and about 85*. Honestly I don't mind the cold.

We had 3 double ladder stands set up in open areas, along old trails and crossings , one in a stand of pines. The land was approx. 90 acres. I'm guessing we were approx. 300 yrds apart. We added a couple ground blinds just in case. I had my favorite ladder stand , just because I picked the site and helped put it up the first day in the woods.

Hunts mostly consisted of getting up before daylight 5:30 and trying to be on stand predawn 6:30 and sit till 10. By then I was getting cold enough to want a warm cup of hot chocolate and a get in front of the stove. I wasn't able to hunt every morning , we had a couple mornings where it was freezing cold and still snowing. even on the warmer days , it was hard to walk quietly in the woods, by this time all the leaves had fallen. As most of you know even fresh snow can be very loud and crunchy. So it was often just a challenge to sneak into the stand quietly. There are 2 great things to say about deer hunting in the snow, fresh tracks are easy to see and following a blood trail!

I do want to say kudo's to anyone sitting for hrs. on end either in a ground blind or tree stand. My time on stand -like anyones was looking and listening for deer movement. I think there was only one day when not even a doe was seen . I also hunting afternoons a few times from 10-3 , with the same results seeing does coming and going but not a lot of bucks or even sign. Evening hunts 1- till dark were basically the same , lots of does with a spike or 2 but not much else except an occcasional turkeys.

Don't get me wrong I enjoyed my trip! This was suppose to be prime time rut, the first 2 weeks of Nov. We had pictures of bucks on the trail cameras. A nice 10 pt. a big 8 point and several smaller bucks. Sure I'd like to tag a big 10 ptr. , but up till the last day all I saw and could identify as a buck was 1 spike , who didn't present a shot anyway. Now my inlaws were seeing bucks- then 10 and the 8 twice but nothing coming close enough for a shot.
i'd go sit the stand with the buck action and see nothing. As far as rutting - there was one day where I actually saw rutting . Meaning a buck chasing a doe. It lasted all of about 5 seconds the first time. Hear a lot of noise , which sounded like deer running/crashing thru the woods. Get bow ready ! Yep its a doe being chased by a buck. Now I mean flat out at a dead run ! Look over shoulder see doe- see buck - their gone ! ok 3 seconds. Same thing about an hr latter . that was the rut for me.! I had does at 20 yrds 30 yrds nearly everyday , I had one at 10 yrds standing on a little ridge ,directly in front of stand about 8 ft below me. I even had one go under me twice. One would figure will all the does around , Bucks should be following them! This continue thru out my hunting season. No real signs of rutting action. No scrapes-No rubs like what the hell's going on!

Last day , I'm leaving the next morning. I get up early, get to stand and sit from 6:30 till 11. Nothing new same thing played out as every other day. does but no bucks. I'm getting cold so i decide to go in and warm up. while standing in front of the stove , drinking a hot chocolate (with a shot of rum). One of the spikes casually walks across the yard 15 yrds away. oK, THEY ARE MOVING ALREADY ! Finish my drink and grab bow - no pack no knife nothing but the crossbow. I take my time and slowly still hunt my way to my stand . I'm trying to be quiet. Look up there's a doe staring at me at about 30 yrds. She's not spooked and she doesn't snort an alarm but runs around me. Ok they are moving . I glance at watch, its like 1:00 and I got 4 hrs to get this done if a buck will cooperate.

I see 7 deer in the next 3 1/2 hrs. All but 3 identified as does. Nothing coming my way, they all seem to be headed to my inlaws stand - funny - it's his ole reliable and he's in the other stand where the 10 ptr seems to showup. Getting down to the wire it's 4:15 with a few minutes of legal shooting hrs approaching fast. I'm thinking get down now and still hunt the last few minutes , and maybe get lucky on way out.

Here comes a doe - she stops in the little clearing 30 yrds away. She's browsing around. I'm thinking great niow I got to sit here till dark so I don't spook her. She jerks up her head and looks behind her. I can make adeer out, it stops at edge of clearing. I'm thinking buck . I get my bow ready - turn on my tru-dot scope. HE steps out. the doe turns and prances off. I'm like noway ! COME ON ! Really. To my surprise the buck , which I can identify as a forky. Not big but the first legal shooter I've seen and he walks up to where I know its 30 yrds. He's standing looking straight at me. Front shot, all I got to do is lift bow and shoot,. Hearts pounding , I'm trying not to breath to loud- LOL. He's just staring at me. He does the raise one leg and put it down solidly. Now we all know this means, he's second s from snorting and bounding off. we've all experienced that over the yrs. Happens everytime !

The buck takes a 1/4 turn away . I'm no expert marksmen but I know the crossbow is sighted in 20-30-40-50. I can make this shot ! IT"S NOW OR NEVER . bow up , dots line up the front leg see the 30 yrd dot on chest -PULL TRIGGER!
Tunk from the bow -CAWACK bolt hits buck. He's off at a dead run. I'm watching , he's flat out hauling and I watch as he disappears behind me. I sit and wait and I think I hear crashing. I wait another few minutes knowing theres not gonna be much time to check out the shot and try find bolt before dark. Remember no pack no knife . That means no flashlight either. lol

I get on phone - send text I just shot a forky and i'm heading in for flashlight knife sled etc. I fully expect to be hauling a deer out. I get down and go to where deer was standing , I can't really see much now- no bolt , so I check for blood and his tracks in snow . I'm disappointed as I don't really see anything. I know I heard a hit, and they way he acted. It's almost 1/2 mile to the road . easy path to follow. Get back to house/cabin. We go back out to get buck. Drive in as close as we can, get to the spot - no bolt- look at tracks where he started his run after I shot. Tiny drops of blood almost like a mist, this continued for about 50 yrds. no real drops just misting on the left side of tracks. Now starting to see more blood but sprayed out on the left side. We find where in crossed the deer trail and headed into the thicker woods. Seeing more blood now but he's turned and headed into a little meadow. We've gone over a 100 yrds and finally find him piled up. time from shot to recovery about 1 hr. He's starting to get stiff already. The reason I didn't find my bolt , flip him over and it's still sticking in him , right to the fleching. broadhead took some damage but did its job. It was a high hit and barely had tip thru otherside. That's why not much blood till he filled up. Using the new doublecross crossbow spitfire, it did the job -took a beating even cut a 2.5 gash on other side but didn't drain a drop from it. you can see in the entrance hole the slip blade cut thru the top of the rib bone.

Here's where I was suppose to take picture of bow and myself with deer. OOPS ! no bow it's back at truck. oh well. To be honest I wasn't even thinking about the contest . LOL

I was immensely happy to be tagging a deer ,that was takin at the final day and final shooting hrs of my trip! We tagged him ,gutted him and hauled him out. I WAS ONE HAPPY HUNTER!

I didn't get my musky trip , so I just spent that time hunting. Rifle starts for those guys tomorrow in wisc.

I did get the meat pole photo and a photo of my Barnett no exomax in Wisc. its in Ariz.

the morning after -- fitting end to my story- I hope to have many more !

Re: 2017 DEER HUNTING CONTEST FOR ARCHERS

Post by Farmer »

It has been a busier than usual year for me , farming and a full time off farm job take up most of my time . Finding time to check stands , put out cameras or scout was not possible . Finding time to hunt deer would prove challenging this year . Along with all the other things keeping my wife Mic and I busy was our 1st grand child . He was to arrive the later part of November . Things changed and my new little hunting partner was scheduled to arrive November 8 .

Wet weather had been hindering getting my soy crop off and a 2 inch rain November 8 put combining on the back burner again . This gave me time to have a quick look at my stands on Sunday afternoon .. With a pair of Binoculars I was able to see they were still in place ( have had trouble with thieves ) . Monday morning would be my 1st chance to bow hunt deer this year .

Monday morning the winds were just right and I was up early and off to a friends farm . A hike of half a concession and I am at my stand ...The ladder stand is sideways in the tree a strap had broke and there was no way to fix at that time . Plan B a quick hike across the wheat stubble to the other side of the field and sit it my other stand .

After getting up in the stand and getting situated a little nap was in order . I awoke to the sound of a trophy squirrel walking behind me in the fence row . Now wide awake it was time to get serious. After a 2.5 hour wait and no action I was getting ready to leave I spotted something walking in front of my stand on the other side of the field . Get out my binos , go figure , a nice buck ! watch him for a bit and decide to leave once he walks into a neighbours corn field . Now I grab my pull up rope put the loop around the stock of my 380 swing it to the side and watch it fall18 feet to the ground , the rope broke ! I was lucky it fell straight down and the stirrup stuck in the mud keeping it upright . I climbed down and checked it out , no damage just like in the Excalibur video's ! Note to self ----- take a shot with the 380 before the next hunt to make sure the scope is still zeroed ...A quick drive around the area to scout a few other property's and I see a number of deer , and a couple people picking corn . I drive the opposite side of the farm I hunted get my bino's out and spot another buck under the same stand I could not hunt . Give me a break !! This one was bigger yet ! I have to fix that stand ....Home I go
Image
Overtime Monday night , no hunting Tuesday . My grandson is scheduled to arrive Wednesday afternoon , I have the day booked off and the little fella is scheduled to arrive at 5pm . Well I have a small window to get the stand fixed ---- off I go and fix the stand . I climb up trim a few branches and spot a trail thru the wheat stubble and red clover where the deer walk from one side of the field to the other ....This is a good sign and there is standing corn in the field behind me . Tomorrow if the wind is right !

Now it is time to wait for my Grandson to arrive . My daughter in law Marie was scheduled for a c section at 5 and that then turned into 7 pm . At 9 Mic and I were able to see Marie and our grand son Asher . It was one of the greatest / proudest moments in my life , my grandson had arrived and I was going to get to hold him !!! We had been waiting on him since Easter , when Marie and Justin told us we were going to be grand parents .

Here is a picture of Asher and Pepe . If you get a close look at Asher's face he looks like he is about to cry ( he is ) Pepe just told him he was going to make a little farmer out of him ! Asher has it down pat already ! LOL
Image

Back to deer hunting .. It is Thursday morning and I am up way early to get ready to head out . Off to the farm . I am wondering how my son , Marie and my new grandson are . Thanking God for his safe arrival ! Another Blessing Thank You Lord !

I get to the farm and park my truck grab my gear and head out across the field to stand A . As I walk across the field I get the very familiar odour of 2-4-d .. Darn they sprayed the clover yesterday afternoon ..Oh well ....Up I go into the stand sit down then have a nap . I come to it is just a bit after legal light . Better dig out my range finder , compact binos , grunt call and water bottle . I get this all set out and promptly drop the water bottle 18 feet and it sound like a hand grenade went off . I am sure everything in the area heard it and me curse . As I am putting an arrow on the rail I spot a deer making a beeline across he field from my left side -- right to me and another following it ( a buck maybe ) It's 2 does . The 1st comes over to check me out . If she walk to my right she will get a sniff of me and it will be over the wind will blow my scent right to her . She stops a bit to my left and stares me down and plays peek a boo. Not alarmed just curious , I play tree . The 2nd doe is on a mission heading to my right ---she will bust me for sure ...She goes by stops has a bit to eat and continues on .. What the heck ----ahh the 2-4-d is so strong it is masking my scent .. The other doer is still in front she heads to my right and she can not smell me either . I hear what I think is a grunt --- I give a couple grunts the big doe looks around and in a few minutes heads back the way she came . A minute later the 1st doe comes back right past me walking slowly following the Big doe ... Then I hear something walking up the fence row behind me and to my right , its another doe .. she trots past stops . The starts to run with her rear end down ....HUH what is goin on .....Now I something coming behind me from the right again , I turn and see a good Buck . He is moving right to where he should be able to smell me, he stops for a second --- I just get the crosshairs on him and he starts to trot to my left . I give a baaahhhh , the buck stops quartering towards me slightly . Range is about 35 yards I start squeezing the trigger ---poop I did check Zero on scope ----Lord please help me ! I shot ( I am using a zombie slayer arrow with a wrap white blazers and a Firenock --- ( I won the firenock at Boofest this year ) I can see the arrow in slow motion heading right for the ten ring ..Right where I wanted it ! Thank you Lord ! There was a loud smack when the Ramcat hit him . The buck swung to his right and headed towards the does ! It is bounding 4 feet in the air making some serious ground ... go down , go down . 25 , 50 , 100 yards at around 150 yards he went limp mid air and fell to the ground like a limp rag .

Now I start to shake a bit trying to realize how fast things transpired this morning . I thank God for the Buck and my Grandson Asher ...This will be Asher's buck ! I climb down and slowly walk over to this beautiful buck giving thanks again along the way ! November 8th and 9th have been great days that I will always remember and cherish !

Headed out to a spot Monday Oct 2nd that I've scouted hard for about 4 years now. Had the SE wind I needed and got to about 60 yards from my spot and could see that there was going to be a problem with my set-up. I knew there were a couple red oaks dropping acorns about 50 yards from the bucks bed (very good). But, a heavy doe trail had started up going to and from known doe bedding about 200 yards SW. I knew they would blow my hunt if I just ignored the sign. So, I ended up making about a half mile loop around their bedding and approached my spot from the South. The last 200 hundred was tricky. A lot of leaves on the ground but, there was a good (SE) wind so I just took my time. Of course, this took about an hour . Now I am a little worried about the time, as it is approaching 5:00 (shooting light will be gone by 6:45). I am very aware my buck may already be on his feet, so I have really slowed down. Finally arrive at my tree and I'm mentally preparing myself to start my set-up when I look towards the swamp transition and see a deer standing there. Too late to put my back against any cover so, I just stand there and watch the now quickly approaching Spike. He is in no danger from me, as I am very interested in the 8 point I saw in this area several times last year. He's the reason I'm in this spot to start with. I got several photos of him in the hardwoods towards the doe bedding early November last season and knew from the time he was showing up he was probably bedded nearby. A scouting trip right after snow melt this past spring confirmed there were a couple probable spots. 1 to the SE of the little Oak stand and 1 more to the South. Any ways, there was indeed another deer about 40 yards back and he was slowly working his way straight towards me. Still couldn't make out if it was target buck and the spike had closed to about 25 yards and had spotted me standing there. He flicked his tail a few times and continued to head towards a bean field about a 1/2 mile to the SW. He was going to cross my entrance trail pretty quick and the gig was going to be up. Meanwhile, he keeps looking over at me and flagging 'all clear' while the now apparent 8 point is continuing to come straight at me. Luckily, there is a deadfall 20 yards away and he will have to go around it (giving me a good shot) as long as I don't get busted by my entry trail first. He finally gets to the deadfall and turns to the East to go around it. Now he is 25 yards away, fully broadside and I can only see from just behind his front shoulder to his hind quarters as he is bracketed between 2 trees. I am holding on him trying not to rush the shot when the spike finally hits my entry trail and gives one short snort. The 8 pt's head immediately whips around right across the chest cavity and now, I'm about to miss my opportunity. Afterer what seems like forever, but was probably only about ten seconds he looks out in front of him and I squeeze off my shot and watch the arrow disappear right in the crease behind the shoulder. All right!! He jumps straight forward runs another 20 or 30 yards and then stops. He just stands there looking over his shoulder. I'm waiting for him to just fall over. He doesn't. I see him wobble in the hind quarters a few times and keep expecting him to go down. Instead after about 5 or 6 minutes , he inexplicably walks towards the SE bedding area. I lose sight of him after about 30 yards behind a clump of balsams. So now, I wait another 15 minutes and then sneak over to were he was standing before he walked off. Not a drop of blood! NO WAY! I carefully back track him and find zero sign that he was hit, till I get to my arrow. Strangely, the arrow is laying 90 degrees from the direction it was shot from and it's not 30 or 40 yards away never to be found buried in the soft ground. Its covered in dark red blood and has a slight paunch odor. I keep playing the shot over and over and can't figure this out. One thing for sure, I have to back out and wait till the morning. He may not have gone far and if pushed I will almost certainly never find him with no blood trail. I get home and call a friend who lives nearby and also is really in to his tracking dogs ( which are legal here) and he suggests we could go after he gets off work around 1:00 AM. I feel more comfortable waiting till morning and we agree to meet at 10:30. Of course, the temperature only drops to 66 overnight and it's supposed to be in the 80's the next day. Hardly slept. Worked a half day and then hurried home to head out and see what would transpire. We made it out to the spot by 11:30. Gave the pup (this would be only her second tracking job, but in training, she'd shown really promising results!) some time to settle down and then set her on the trail. I watched my buddy disappear around that small patch of hemlocks I’d seen the deer disappear behind and hear him exclaim, "which deer did you shoot"? What? I reply? “Dude, I thought you said you shot a spike. That's a nice deer.”

I love my Excalibur but today I used my vertical bow. I can barely pull back 42 pound draw weight by myself and it is a little more challenging for me because I have to do everything myself. But I still love the sonic broadheads but these are 100 grain and my crossbow uses 150 grains. I can ride my bicycle to our little property that’s in the city with my bow but I cannot do that with the crossbow. I rode out there in the dark and called Dad at 7 o’clock and said bring the truck we have to fit my bike my bow and my deer in the back. Tomorrow for Thanksgiving we are going to bring the meat to the tent city, we had a hurricane and that is where a lot of people without homes are living.
