Cover scents

Post by LongCarbine »

I have been making my own cover scents for a long time (I'm cheap). Take a bottle of Everclear 198 proof. What ever you want for scent ceder, pine earth ,acorns ect... Fill up pint canning jars with them then add Everclear . Leave 1/4 inch from top put lid on . It will take a few weeks . Then put in small squirt bottles ( just the liquid). You will get a strong smell at first but in a few seconds the alcohol will be gone and you are left with the scent. I just opened a jar of ceder scent I made 8 years ago .Put in a shot of everclear in just to thin it out a little, and it's good to go . I think when the oils are pulled out the shelf life is a long time . Try it if it don't work drink it :D

The alcohol draws the oils out then evaporates leaving the oils behind .Lesser % of alcohol might work but I know everclear doesn't leave any unwanted orders behind.I didn't think water worked too good .It seam to spoil and just rot .

One cover scent that I have used for years is skunk scent applied to my hat or hunting jacket
The deer don't seem to be alarmed at all by it. When I worked on the farm I would just hunt in my barn clothes... they were used to the smell of cow manure so it seemed natural to them.
