Shot to vitals, bolt deflects into the guts!

Post by vpsaline »

I got my first xbow harvest this season and I'm super pumped    Also my first adult doe

The shot that I took was at only 20 yards using 100GR Killzone Broadheads on 385GR Bolts using my Micro335!

The shot was strange as when I took it, it was a perfect broadside shot, but the bolt deflected wildly into the guts exited way back and into the ground at a funny angle.

Image

The shot left ZERO blood trail and only tiny specs of guts on the ground. It was a miracle that I found her.

Question is, since I'm new at this, is it normal for a bolt to deflect so much? Is it simply indicative of a large two blade head hitting ribs and deflecting or is it a sign of a broad head that's too light perhaps?

I appreciate any constructive feedback.

Thanks

Sounds like one blade popped open.

The entry wound was MASSIVE, you can tell it easily had the 2'' cut that you expect from the KillZone, and from her running, that wound stretched to 4-5 inches on the hide. I see your point, but I don't think failure to open was the culprit.

Also inside the chest cavity I could easily see that the blades had both opened. Two ribs were cut with classic 2'' pattern.

Your custom bolts worked great by the way

I think one blade opened causing it to veer greatly on impact. Usually those heads make massive wound channels with LOT'S of blood. Unusual to say the least. those heads have performed very well for lot's of folks. Glad you found your deer!

Or the deer was not actually broadside but angled towards you n the B-head followed its aimed course. I have been fooled many times through the yrs about the exact way the tick toter actually was when shot or it moved jus abit before the arrow made contact

I thought the same thing, but at 20yards? It had time to move so much?

This really has me questioning those 40-45 yard shots everyone are talking about!

MAYBE it was slightly quartering towards me. Slightly. But if it reacted to the shot it would mean that she turned towards the shot, that hypothesis has me baffled. I'm almost certain she did the opposite, she turned AWAY from me after the shot.

Jus a tip i learned thru the yrs while Bowhuntin tick toters. This method has stood many yrs n has not failed me yet. I seldom shoot a deer standin still, i prefer to shoot them as they are walkin slowly by me. While they are walkin n any other deer wid'em their hooves make noise crunching leaves n sticks. They don't react near as fast to the sound of an arrow or the crossbow when its shot. They hear their n other deer's foot falls in the leaves

I have noted a few odd pattern entry and exit wounds on deer that I have shot with my Excalibur over my 28 year hunting history that left me very puzzled and wondering "how did the arrow do that?"
I always thought it would be cool to have a slow motion camera footage just to see how it went down to satisfy my perplexing question.
Congrats on your first deer and wish you many more.

I bet it hit a rib bone and defelcted the bolt. When you hit high you get little blood.
The guts seal the exit. I shot a doe at a slight angle in the front shoulder and it deflected out the guts. Next time try a fixed head like slick trick and it should blow thru. I think this happens a lot with mech heads.

Very true, the exit wound was sealed shut with guts and a pile a leaves! What you're saying makes sense.

I think my next broadhead of choice is going to be the Grizz Trick 2. Put that flixed blade to the test. Seeing how the KillZone compares to the Grizz Trick should put the debate to rest
