Questions for any hunter here in NC

Post by Bcwn »

What are you guys seeing in the way of activity in your area given the weather we are having here. Harnett county was hot as hell until this morning we will see temps drop quick. With that being said I'm feeling we haven't seen a rutt as of yet. What say you guys?

I live in Wisconsin . An old Indian told me the peak of the rut is 30 days after the first full moon after the fall equinox . For the last 40 years he has been right . Here in Wi. it would be Nov 4th . For him it wasn't to get a love sick buck , it was he wouldn't shoot a buck in full rut because he said it tasted like crap. If he wanted that taste he would club his old billy goat on the head and make stew

November here too for the rut to kick in. Last week of October, first week of November is the best time to rattle and lure bucks in with decoys around here.
Good Luck in NC!

I’m a little closer to NC being in N. Ga. and I can tell you that there has been no activity yet and the only pics I’m getting right now are at night because of the temps. Generally in this area things will pick up around Halloween (small bucks trolling) and then really kick in 2nd week of November.

The bucks have been sparring here in Clark, Taylor, & Price county.
Another week and rattling & grunting will work well.
Chase phase should start in about 1 1/2 - 2 weeks which is my favorite time since the bucks are chasing does that aren't ready yet. :)

I'm in Wake Forest. It's been pretty quiet since about the 3rd week of Sept. Seems to happen every year and I can't figure it out. But I was out Fri - Mon this past weekend and finally had deer moving on public land in the daylight. But on private lands where I previously killed...zip. Saw the first scrapes on the ground Monday AM. They were not there Sat AM so it looks like it may be just starting to get better.

I hunt in the Piedmont of NC for the past dozen years. Almost never see any deer until just 3-7 days before Halloween. Even with this great cold front we had the past few days I've seen nothing during daylight hours.

This is mostly my experience here as well. I see deer very early in Sept., then nothing until almost Nov. My question is WHY?? What is happening? Is it all temperature, or daylight, or what?

I think deer are smarter than we give them credit for. I've seen some deer behavior that convinced me they actually have some capacity to reason. I think they quickly know when they're being hunted, and go nocturnal. That lasts until the Rut, when Mother Nature pumps them so full of sex hormones that they lose all sense of reason -- kind of like teenagers! ;)

Lee county, I have sat 9 times in a tree stand and only seen tree rats. I believe that it has been very warm but BP opens 10/28 and we are due for some cold weather I hope. I do have trail cam pics but most all of them are night time shots. I did get a pic of the largest bobcat that I have ever seen. About as large as a deer.

That IS cool......easy to mistake that for a mountain lion if you just get a glimpse in the woods.

That bobcat is big! I had a big one like that creep up a dry creek bed in the Uwharries on opening day of Blackpowder Season one year. I was sitting above the creek bank under a holly tree with my flintlock smoothbore. He got within 15 yards before catching my scent! Then he just turned around and snuck away - didn't run or anything.
