Good Weekend in NC

Post by nchunterkw »

My brother in law came to visit this weekend and I took off Friday and Monday so we could do some hunting. Temps were mid-high 60s Friday AM and we hit some public land. We hunted here before, but I had not stepped foot on the property yet this year....and there are a bunch of new homes being built right up against the edge of the game lands .....so I think lots of guys have not hunted it. But Friday AM we set out and saw a couple walking in. My brother in law sat there and I went further back. At about 7:30 a doe came sneaking in out of the creek bottom and stopped at about 25 yds. I shot and hit her high for some reason but she dropped on the spot so it was a short blood trail. Clean pass thru with the Ramcat. I field dressed her and drug her over to where my brother in law was and then we tied her to a pole and carried her the rest of the way to the truck...about 3/4 mile. Friday night we hit some private land I hunt but didn't see anything. It was in the 70's though. Sat AM was again in the high 60's but we made the mile hike back to the public land. Sat in basically the same spots. I moved a little bit further up the creek bed because the guy pile from Friday was still there. This time at about 8:00 AM 2 does came in...mother and fawn. They were set to come in for a nice 20 yd broadside shot, but decided to loop around a couple of trees further out. It was now or never and I took a rushed shot at what I thought was 38yds. I just blew it and put it over her back. They run about 30 yds away and then here she comes. The fawn went straight back to where they were when I missed but she looped into the woods. Yep she paraded back and forth at 20 yds broadside and I'm sitting there with an uncocked bow in my lap (hunting on the ground in my ghille suit). They eventually just worked their way out into the creek bed and that was that. Sunday we all went to the beach. One nice thing about NC. Can be hunting one day and at the beach the next day. Monday AM we again headed out to the public lands. This time it was in the middle 60's but the temps were to drop all day to the 50's. Rain was coming too. It started out as a good overcast morning but quickly the wind picked up and that seemed to keep everything laying low. Neither of us saw anything. But on my way out I saw a few new scrapes that had not been there previously. We decided to hunt the same place Monday night, and since it was now gun season, I took my AR-15 outfitted with Remington Hog Hammer ammo. AT about 5:30 a buck just "appeared" hard to my right. He was very fidigety and heard me take the safety off but the wind was good for me and he eventually moved out towards the creek bottom. Lots of trees between me and him and he was moving pretty much straight away but eventually gave me a shot at about 60 or 70 yds hard quartering away. At the shot he dropped and that was that. I was aiming at the crease behind the shoulder but was offhand and turned to my right and I hit about 2" off and hit him in the neck. Another "fun" drag but we got him out and he's all cut up and in the cooler. I'm also trying my hand at tanning the hide since it doesn't have any giant RamCat holes in it. Good weekend, fun times with my brother n law and more hungry people will be getting much needed healthy protein.

Preach on brother, our weather here is just plain crazy sometimes. I headed to spend the week fishing at Mom and Dads place on North Top Sail all week and of course the cold weather is coming in. Congrats on the harvest.

They fear it.....what actually happens is they come up to about 20 yards and see the beard and drop over in fear. I have to make up all these shot scenarios.
