Double pass through

Post by grouse »

This story is about a week old because I have been in northern Wisconsin grouse hunting.

Before leaving to meet some friends up north for some bird hunting, I packed for the trip and drove to my northern Missouri farm last Tuesday to take care of a few chores and do a little crossbow hunting. After getting a few things done, I headed out for an evening hunt. I chose a tree stand next to an opening that leads from a 25 acre thicket into an (as yet) unharvested corn field. On the way a doe stepped out of the thicket about 75 yards ahead of me and eventually went back into the thicket. Deer seemed to be moving all over, two different deer ran through the corn field knocking down and rattling stalks in the process. Soon a big doe and two fawns walked into a clearing in front of my stand, less than 10 yards away. I was going to shoot the doe but she never gave me the shot I wanted, she was always facing me or behind a few branches. One of the fawns walked right up to my ladder and sniffed my quiver (which I always leave on the ground). I didn't take a shot.

A little later another doe appeared about 35 yards to my left. The shooting rail on my tree stand only offers a good support in front, so I have to shoot off hand to the sides. I have shoulder arthritis so that can be a problem. The doe was standing broadside so I rested the bow on the arm rest, focused on my target and raised the bow and fired as soon as the crosshairs were where I wanted them to be. I saw the lighted nock disappear right behind her shoulder and she went down as if she had been pole axed. She struggled briefly and to my shock I saw what was nearly the full length of the arrow sticking out of her neck. When I got down and walked over there she was dead and the arrow was laying next to her, bloody but undamaged. There was an entry wound behind her right shoulder, an exit wound opposite the entry wound, another entry wound on the left side of her neck and another exit wound on the right side of her neck. She apparently (I don't remember seeing this) turned her head to do something just before I shot, setting up the strange situation that followed.

I was shooting a 350 SE with a Black Eagle Executioner and a Slicktrick magnum.

Congrats on a good kill.
Years ago I had a similar experience. I shot at a doe at 35 yards that was licking her right shoulder which was pretty much broadside to me. I watched her run off and thought I had missed her as my arrow did not have any hair or blood on it. I walked about 10 yards in the direction she had run and suddenly spotted a path of blood that appeared to be poured out of a bucket onto the ground it was so thick. Turned out that one of the blades hit the side of her neck and cut an artery wide open before the arrow deflected into the ground.

There are things that happen at the moment the shot is made that cannot be explained, glad you put her down quickly, congrats!
