My one issue with the HHA Optimizer

The one complaint that I have with the HHA Optimizer is when hunting in a blind you often are unable to make out the yardage numbers when you are getting near the end of the hunt for the day. You can always set it to the most likely yardage and then hold over or under. So I started thinking on how to be able to dial in at 20,30, and 40 yards when sitting in the blind and not being able to see the numbers on the tape. I came up with the following of using three small clips, one for each of the 3 points that I wanted to be able dial to by feel.


They snap into place on the dial wheel, still working on getting the exact sizing adjusted in my cad model so that they can snap into place yet are fairly fixed in position once you put them on. I printed a couple of them in black plastic and printed the middle one using a glow in the dark plastic. Still a work in progress as I am still considering just building an adjustable brightness LED illumination ring to go around it as well.

Thanks for the kind words, I do try to keep my mind busy and this combines two of my hobbies, crossbows and 3D printing. With a little practice you can get the dial set by feel within plus or minus about 2 yards of where you are trying to get it set. Precise enough for a deer sized target within 40 yards.

Great idea, I use glow in the dark duct tape that I bought from Walmart. I mark my 20,30 and 40 and the marker itself with very small pieces of the tape. I charge it with a flashlight for a few seconds right before the light begins to fade and the tape glows in the dark.
