Custom arrows?

Post by stoneycreekhunter »

Big John had previously made me some custom arrows. Unfortunately for me I understand that he's not making them anymore.

I'm trying to recreate the following for my matrix 380 and NAP FOCs:

Zombies
Aluminum Fronts
Red Lumenoks ( They appear orange)
Florescent Orange Wraps
Florescent Orange Blazers
One white fletch

Are there any other members on this site that can help me?

Thanks

The costs to the small quantity dealers has gone crazy for their purchases. I too have given up for the most part. There are some guys that truly appreciate the work that goes into making them, and they understand the squeeze that the big boys put on us. My advice, reach out to John, and let him know what you want, and pay him for the costs he has to absorb now. I have told the folks that bought from me in the past, those days are gone. I cannot do it for a loss, and John cannot either. You can get good deals on factory fletched arrows, and some components, then strip them & make want you like. I encourage folks that hunt to get into making their own. The cost for tools is high at first, but if you plan to hunt for a few years, and have some friends, or kids, it can be fun, and very rewarding.

Wish you lots of luck!
Dan

Dan is giving you the straight good there. My big John's are now being horded away.
I would suggest you find a EZ-fletch Bolt. Its really quite brainless. It will never be up to John or Dan's standards. But it will do what it's supposed to do .
I now buy 20" zombies with a a 110 insert, cut to length and use the EZ fletch and it's pretty slick.

Come on, you know John, and the rest of us all started with one arrow, then another. You are your own harshest critic when you are the end user. The key really is to remember what works! Like said, it's not nuclear physics.

I recently bought everything needed to do my own custom arrows. The price is very steep to start with but will be regained 10 fold over the future years! If you really want to do your own arrows, I suggest not to go cheap! I don’t like tower jigs, I’m in no hurry and that’s about the only advantage that I can see with using them. I’m waiting for my Bitzn to be shipped from fleabay. The Bohning Blazer Jig is the best for 3 degree right helical. The Arizona EZ-Fletch Pro is nice to use. The Aerovane jig is just too unreliable. The Grayling jigs are good jigs too. I’m partial to the single fletch jigs for more precise & better details for each vane. Good luck!

In the 80s and 90s l had a full blown arrow shop l still have all the stuff l make my longbow arrows. But now l just buy the factory fletched zombies and executioners from lancaster archery honestly they are probably fletched by machine but who cares they are perfect with a offset fletch.l find it just not worth the trouble to make them. Making custom arrows and refletching for customers was actually very profitable back then but not now.l find it easier to just take an extra job on nowadays at my regular business and make more money. ....who knows maby all the fletching cement l inhaled back then has warped my brain...... lol.l remember feeling a little light on my feet having a couple beers n refletching shafts.

Yep the single dingle jigs are sweet. If you use the EZ-Bolt there are some tips to make things really make things easier in terms of outcome & clean-up. I have been meaning to make a YouTube video, and might just do one after the season. It is hard to beat that jig in terms of simplicity & consistency. I have pretty much gone 100% for my vertical arrows, and crossbow arrows, but recently went another direction. I use the APE from Nu-Fletch for my personal stuff, and may never go back. I can cut my own lengths needed for these, and after years of making arrows, the rest is really simple. Just Saying!

The Aerovane jig is just too unreliable.
Can you explain why? Considering the quality components the Aerovane Jig looks and performs exceptionally well the way I see it.

You read my mind as I had the exact question. I have the AAE Multifletcher, Single Fletcher, Bitz., and the Aerovane Jig. In my opinion, the Bitz was my go to for years and far superior to everything else I tried. However, I believe the Aerovane Jig surpasses it. For crossbow arrows I still love the E-Z FLETCH BOLT for ease, speed, and ease of 're-fletching damaged vanes. I'm curious to hear your perspective as to the Aerovane Jig?

Bigbowman, I thought the same thing too until I got one to use. Combined with the Aerovane glue, it is an excellent product. In many ways it is far better than the Bitz. To use his glue, you need to hold the shaft horizontal which as you know, it cannot be done with the Bitz. I know Norm has used the Aerovane jig with a gel. The only down side of the Aerovane jig I've seen so far is that you cannot get more than a 1.5 degree offset, but it is really designed to use Aerovanes. It even allows you to replace one vane with excellent accuracy. The magnets have far more grip on the clamp than the Bitz and they (magnets) are adjustable.
With the Aerovane glue, the vanes stick in a couple of seconds and unlike most fletching adhesives, you can shoot the arrow after several hours.
I will be using my Arizona EZ Fletch for installing Blazers in a helical and the Aerovanes with the Aerovane fletching tool. I have 2 Bitzenburger fletching tools and am going to put them up for sale.

I may have typed before my brain caught up. What I meant was that it looked that way. I also was thinking the AAE fletching jig! NOT the Aerovane Jig! I’m guilty of foot in mouth on occasion! I would love the laser guiged jig but that is only in my dreams of buying it with my lottery winnings!
