Patch of of fur missing

Post by Jozzer »

I just got my first deer.. its an 8 point buck. On its side there is a patch of fur missing about the size of my hand.
Should i be concerned about the meat.. otherwise the deer seems healthy...

As long as the underside of the skin and the meat in the area look normal I wouldn't worry about it. Probabaly just some kind of skin irritation. And congratulations!

Could be from fighting other bucks hard to say with no pictures but my guess is the meat is fine.

Did it tear into the meat ? I would guess It is from fighting or it rubbed against something like a fence wire or tree . I would say it should be fine to use .

You should have seen the hair that was missing from a buck I shot years ago with a shotgun slug I shot it a 1/4 plus mile from the truck had to drag it all the way There was a lot of hair missing from him most of one side looked like road rash down to the leather . Could not do that again even if I wanted

Watch Lee & Tiffany's Live Deer Cam and you will see plenty of big bucks missing lots of hair as they feed. Some scrape it off themselves with their oversize antlers and some loose it in fights.

:D I have this issue with every one I harvest, especially the heavier ones. I only have to drag a few hundred yards and its mostly downhill, but we have plenty of rocks. If I don't have something under the deer, I'll generally pull a bald spot or two on the fur from the rocks. You can follow my drag trail and see a little hair along the way. Its not a problem at all. If you kill one that you plan on mounting, you'll have to come up with a way to get it out without damage to the hide. I use a sled that is similar to a kids snow sled.
