How hot is too hot for you to hunt

Post by Bcwn »

Just posted a thread about next season, and I see the almanac calls for a drier hotter season hear in area 4, so how hot and how will you prepare for your hunt this next year knowing next year is gonna be hot once again.

It's almost never too hot to hunt in Ontario - deer opens on the 1st of October and some year I have been out in shirt sleeves but has never been too warm.

This past year was hot. The third week of September I was up north hunting upland birds and it was hot and humid. Had to pack it in one morning because the humidity was so high that it was fogging up my glasses and I couldn't see :)

That's the one and only time I have ever stopped hunting due to heat.

When it gets in the middle to upper 70's or more, it's too hot for me.

Usually true for deer. Bear on the other hand opens as early as Aug 15th. I have shut down bear hunting due to heat a number of times. This past year the warmest weather of the season (+33C or 90ishF) was in mid september right smack in the middle of the bear hunt. In general I call it quits if the temp goes over 25C (77F).

I can deal with the heat for the most part, even the 90's, I am cold blooded. But when it gets hot I have to use a thermocell and I think that just tips off every deer in the area. As opposed to when I am bundled up like the abominable snow man and nothing could smell me...

I've noticed the past couple seasons that during the early September doe season that the deer move very little in the afternoon if the temps are above 70F. I still hunt mornings when its going to be warm, but I pass on the afternoon hunts until it cools off. They aren't moving until after dark anyway when it gets real hot. So I guess anything above the 70F range is too hot for me.

Our archery bear season starts around 24 Sep and the archery quota is usually filled (150) w/I 3 days. I’m normally hunting in 90 degree F (32C) + temps. Hate it! Still hunt though. I hunt ponds for deer in the really hot times. Doesn’t get too cold or hot for me to hunt. I’m only 70. When I get old, things might change.

I really dislike huntin when its above 80 degrees, i reckon its more of havin to deal wid the deer. The bugs are terrible in that heat, i have decided that i will field dress mine, put 2 bags of ice into cavity n take them to my Summer Sausage makin ppl. They skin n bone it out n make my Summer sausage like i want fer $220 done n froze :D

Our bow season in Tx. Starts either last Sat. In Sept., or first Sat in Oct. Temps are routinely in upper 80's - lower 90's. If you don't hunt in that , you don't hunt. NO pop up blinds in afternoon!!! They are an oven. Walk VERY slowly to stand, shady spot to shady spot, stop and rest offend to try not to be too lathered up when you get to stand. Wind in face! Still days are nearly as bad as wind in wrong direction because your scent just lingers.I like it much better when it cools off some, but you can't hunt 'em from the couch. Watch out for No Shoulders.

I live in N central MN and season starts mid Sept. and runs to Jan 1. I have seen days that I was a little over dressed but never have seen it to hot.

Our bow season here in Georgia opens in early September and we had temps throughout September and October in the high 80's and low to mid 90's so I did not hunt much in those months for the first time in many years even though there was decent deer movement recorded on the cameras.

I made a choice to be comfortable in the air conditioning instead of toughing it out with the heat and bugs....... I will not make the same mistake next season no matter what the temps are because I sit here now with no meat in the freezer, 2 weeks left in the season and very little deer movement.

It got pretty hot a couple days back in October.

More so in Ontario we see it more with spring turkey. One day it will be frosty at the end of april and then a week later itll be too hot for pants and a long sleeve tshirt . of course then it will frost again and rain for the next six days. Then bugs ...

You got the very little movement part right here in GA. Where in heck have they disappeared to. My four cameras are only getting a few night pics now. Best camera of them all did not get a single pic in two weeks. Even my back yard food plot in town has gone dead and it is usually swamped this time of year. I have not seen but a couple of does off stand in over two weeks now. DEAD.....

Only time it was too hot for me was a couple years ago I went for the velvet hunt in Kentucky first week of September and it was 90 all week. The heat didn't really bother me but it bothered the deer as I only saw one out in daylight.

I don’t know where they went Robert but I haven’t seen so few deer on my property in the last 20 years and I’m more than a little concerned. I’m also not hearing gunshots like I normally do.

I am off from work until Jan. 2 so with so little time left I think I’m going to be toten the xbow, ML and 300wsm the next few days. :)
