Chinese made broadheads

Post by SEW »

On the “best $1 I ever spent” thread, there’s a discussion about 2” Rage broadheads. I also ordered 24 of them. Cheaply made, spin fair with included rings. Will order more rings.
So, I went back on eBay and noticed a wide assortment of broadheads, all for about a dollar each.
Schwacker, Killzones, Rages, others.
How good, how bad are these?
Are any of you using any of these?

PS The Rages did a fairly decent spin test. I understand getting “real” collars will make them spin even better. They do need sharpened. They seem like a good buy. I weighed a # of them” 98.8 -100.0 grains. In contrast, 100g real Spitfires weigh appx 107g with no better consistency.

I don't think I would consider any of them for the simple reason that no matter what bow you shoot the broadhead is the most important component. I spend a lot for my crossbows and arrows and want to shoot the best broadheads [my choice] . this is my thought on the matter. when it come to the outdoors stuff I like to try to buy the best that I can. they may work for some but it's not for me. Sounds very sketchy to me. At the minimum I would proof test them on a pig carcass to see how they hold up on impact and to see what type of wound channel they create. I have a hard time believing the steel quality could be anything but terrible at that price.

It amazes me that hunters will spend thousands on bows and other equipment to equip themselves to hunt. Then they screw on a cheap Chinese knock off broad-head and hope they don't fail. The broadhead is one of the most important items in my hunting arsenal and I don't mind buying quality is American made broadheads that I can count on during the moment of truth!!

I'm going to guess that broadhead manufacturers make more money than anyone else in the archery world. China is the leading manufacturer for many if not most archery products (I know for a fact Excalibur excluded as well as a handful of other manufacturers). So given that China makes so many products like broadheads, why wouldn't they sell them here? I bought some Rage Hypodermics from China and other then the blades were not hair popping sharp, they look pretty good. If they're a one shot deal, that's ok with me because I retire all my broadheads after they've been used in the field.
I bought Trophy Ridge broadheads from $21 to $26, Grim Reapers for $25, Spitfire XXX for $26, Carbon Express for $20, a 6 pk of Toxic knock offs for $18 and the Hypodermic knock offs for $31 for 12. All from Amazon.ca which included shipping and in Canadian dollars. I'm pretty sure that I won't be using the knock offs on animals but then are they made in the same plant in China? I wonder!

Not really stirrin the pot but as said over half of the B-Heads we get here by Companies have their B-Heads made in China so they can make even more profit. Things are gettin abit pricy fer me at B-Heads at $10 n more each. They are a one shot use here fer me, rocks, trees, n bone that they hit n no longer any good. Most of the B-heads have alum. ferrules n you twist them tight by hand n can bend them. These knock-offs come out of the same plant the originals are made at! Must be double dippin form the cross the pond ppl. I am ponderin that half the pkg. cardboard in the B-Head packs are made n printed in China. So how do you knowed who is tellin the truth anymore ? You knowed what? yeah i am goin to buy some n try them out on these varmits called Tick Toters. I ain't worried my girls will find them, i have one of my girls that will jump on one thats down n grab it by the head n it won't be draggin her far

I just watched a whole series of utube videos on the Chinese Rage 2” Hypodermics. The intent and content of the videos were overall good but the sample sizes ( often only 1) were a bit small.
My findings after getting some real Rages as well as my knockoffs.
Weight : no statically differences. The Chinese were all 98.8-100.0 and the real were about 101.0 +/-0.6 which is identical ES.
Spin testing the same with real rings. Get real retaining rings.
Sharpness : both tip and blades were slightly better with real. Honing of blades is quick and easy.
Shooting is the same.
Country of origin: same, China.

I'm a vendor and practically every archery accessory arrives in master cartons (brown cardboard boxes) from China. Many of the "domestic companies" don't even package their product over here.

Now, I get the argument that they (domestics) have their product made "over there" to their exacting standards but I sometimes also see the documents for the "landed cost" of the product. An item that is unloaded in Long Beach or Vancouver with a price of $5 to the distributor ends up on the shelf at well over 30 bucks.

That isn't the retail location making all that money, they are lucky to make 12%, is gobbled up by the vendor and everyone else that touches it along the line. The "consumer" does not benefit from making a product off shore because the ultimate cost remains as if it was manufactured domestically.

As to the quality of the "knock offs".

Some are obviously a "knock off" in it's normal understanding. They have nothing to do with actual production of the real product. They get a sample, reverse engineer it, produce it and charge 10% of the "real thing".

Then there is a second form of "knock off" that didn't exist before all the mfg was moved off shore. Now you have the C.H. Ina company making ABC broadheads for ABC. They make them, they package them and then they ship them off to the company over here (or their distributor).

After they have run the 10,000 units for ABC they simply keep the line running for a day or two. They "knock off" the "exact in every respect" product that they have just produced.

ABC pays them 3 bucks for the product and then it gets marked up to $35 by the time I put it on the shelf.

C.H. Ina can toss that in the mail after a FleaBay transaction, charging the buyer a buck or two more then they make from ABC and make more money then they do on the ABC contract.

So if you are buying the "knock off" from the actual factory (or their agent) that simply kept the line running, unless you believe they re-tool and swap out the mfg materials before running off a few thousand extra, then you ARE getting the "real product", you are just cutting out a bunch of the middle men.

All you have to decide is if you want to gamble your 5 bucks. You might get the product from the source or you might get what we used to consider a knock-off from a place that had no connection to the "real thing".
