Does a Triggertech trigger soften the twang or snap noise when the string is released? After listening to youtube videos of a cross bow being fired, I think most of the noise is caused by the string being released from the steel pin. Don't hear that noise when a vertical bow string is released.

Nope. Changing the trigger won't alter the decibel count when you fire your bow. Won't change the noise level on your 30-06 either, if you change triggers.

The noise you hear isn't coming from your trigger.

The trigger has little to nothing to do with the bulk of noise that comes from shooting. Most noise starts at the limb tips and ends up at the stirrup. Some comes from arrow retainers that haven't been silenced.

A vertical bow is operating with way less draw weight and the string does not travel down a rail. The noise comes from the release of stored energy which on some crossbows is significant. You can get rid of some of the noise with a variety of silencing devices available however the noise in practice is less of an issue than some think.

In most cases the noise bothers the shooter more than the animal being shot at.

The noise is created by excess energy that isn't transferred to the arrow. Best way to silence any bow, vertical or crossbow, is by increasing arrow weight within acceptable limits.

I just did a little testing with some specialized slow motion video cameras. I was shooting 420 grain, 18" Zombies from my M380 and 440 grain 22" arrows from my compound Frankenbow (175lbs draw and 390fps). It's amazing to see how the quiver, scope, limbs, string, bumpers, silencing equipment and stirrup are flopping around like crazy. What I saw was the Matrix 380 settling completely after the shot in about 130th second. The Frankenbow was much quieter and all movement stopped in about 1/300th second. This leads me to believe that the sooner you can stop all the movement after the shot the quieter the bow will appear. However, I do believe we do this more for ourselves rather than to be more effective in a hunting situation. Perhaps one of the members I sent the links of the footage to will be able to post it here. Sorry, me and computers are kinda like bulls and China shops.

Which is why I wear Eye Plugs during all practice shooting sessions. ( 100 shots plus )
Hearing protection is always the best choice "cheap insurance" to minimize even the slightest possibility of hearing damage.

The exception to the rule for me wearing them is only while hunting . Which usually only involves one shoot .

"Sound levels above (85 Decibels) even in a Short Explosive Burst even more so especially when in close proximity to your ear can and will over time result in diminish hearing."

I say it is better to error on the side of caution based on these numbers for sure.
